there are tons of russians, etc in NY. they make good cash and they support their own. lomachenko could be an HBO fighter, too.

He was 20 after he won his first gold medal, the decision to stay amateur and win another gold medal was perfectly suitable for someone that age. At 24 he's in the best position to turn proffesional, 2 gold medals behind him and he's in his prime. Could be fighting for a world title by the time he's 26.

The way I see it, turn professional with a proper promotional outfit or just stay amateur.

He and his family are being taken care of for many years and he can get another olympics gold medal

He knows what he's doing

if he's doing what he wants to do and remaining comfortable then i cant tell him to do otherwise.


however, waiting for the next olympics (when he'll be 28,) is not going to bode well for his professional prospects. i dont just mean the sport of pro boxing, either, i'm talking about the money he can make. he'll be in the aiba league, but he'll be spending the prime of his career, as a small man who peaks early, as an amateur.

he'd probably sign a contract with a big promotor with a six or seven figure signing bonus, and fight for few years off of TV making smaller money, but eventually he'd start fighting on the big networks and making six figures.

he'd need to fight at least at LW, unless there were other great FW to match him with (mexicans, philipinos, guys who draw. lomachenko vs donaire, etc.) that's where the money is.

he's way too small to be a WW, by the look of things. that's where many of the biggest fights have been happening for a decade now.


it is hard to see him becoming a massive star. perhaps you're right. but if he made it here in the states he'd make many times what he can make overseas.
