today's fighters, eeeh, i guess they are ok, but imo, are just too carefully matched, too scared to lose because of marketability...a sparring session between pernell and floyd, i understand took place when pernell was in his prime, and floyd was a pup...you think pernell would have unloaded on floyd and ruined him because floyd may have landed on him?...eh, i wouldn't take much stock in a sparring session...
agree with alot of this post except the part about sparring. i'm not going to say pernell was necessarily fightign like he would the last 2 sparring sessions for a world title fight, but i'm sure he wasn't loafing either.

sweet pea was an olympian for the US so I''m sure he would spar in a way to help another young us amatuer do well.

      It would be a NC.

Both would just cirlce around looking at each other and fainting for 12rd's.

And they say Spadafora gave PBF all he can handle in sparring..sparring is sparring..you mess around..you try different things..etc..its not the same as a real boxing match.

The main problem I see for Floyd is that Whitaker is a southpaw. Mayweather sparred Whitaker and - not sure if it's true - it was apparently easy work.

It doesn't take any nostalgia to pick PERNELL WHITAKER over Mayweather, or any 135 lb. or 140 lb. fighter in history (although I'd hesitate to make Pea the favorite over Duran).

Whitaker had a brilliant jab, seemingly effortless combination punching, good handspeed and faster upperbody movement. His defense was multi-layered because he could use his legs, or stay in front of you and make you miss, was a master of angles, and was good at keeping that right glove on the right side of his face to ward off left hooks. He could be effective at different ranges and was good at using dirty tricks up close (basically shoving his opponent back with the right side of his body while digging in to the body with the left). Not a big puncher, but could do real damage with that left hand when he loaded up on it.

These are two of the smartest and most skilled fighters ever so you can expect a lot of adjustments and traps being set. Mayweather will get that straight right in, that would be his most effective weapon. The main difference here, IMO, would be Whitaker's advantage in workrate and his southpaw jab. I'd favor Pea by 7-5, 8-4 type decision.

Mayweather has a better chance at 147 and up.

true. sweet pea could've had an off day. but it still would take a special fighter at that age to take advantage if this was the case?

well, the man was speculating that floyd mayweather jr., made easy work of pernell whitaker, in a sparring session...to which i couldn't see that happening at all, being that pernell was #1 p4p at the time, and floyd hadn't even went to the olympics yet, according to you...i could see what you are suggesting, being more the case...

i agree with everything here, except that, the higher the weight, the more whitaker would expose the fact that, floyd mayweather, ring iq and all, lacks the great competition that he would need, to beat a fighter as savvy as the 147 lb version of pernell...

i think after 8, 9 rounds, pernell's experience would just take over...when pernell makes floyd miss with that predictable jab to the chest, jab to the chest, then go upstairs, what does floyd do?...pernell's got him frustrated...pernell frustrated everybody...i mean everybody..and he would just start walking him down, past the 8th or 9th round....

Whitaker out-slicks Floyd to a decision.
