About an hour before facing off during a July 11 press conference at the Wynn Resort Hotel in Las Vegas, RING middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. and WBC beltholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. were in their respective hotel rooms urinatinig in cups.
The unannounced random drug testing was the first of possibly more "purely discretionary" procedures that could happen in advance of their HBO Pay Per View-televised clash for the belt belonging to Chavez Jr. that is slated for Sept. 15 at The Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
"The collectors went to their hotels and they were in their own rooms and they were in there and took care of business. I believe that they were both done roughly an hour before the press conference began," said Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
"Sometimes, they come back early, but usually it takes about seven to 10 days. So hopefully I will have the results soon. But it could be as early as five minutes from now or as late as next Monday. Hopefully, though, it will be sometime this week."
The last time the procedure was done for a major boxing event was in March for the bout featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather and Miguel Cotto were tested in advance of Mayweather's unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto for the WBA's super junior middleweight title.
"The testing is done randomly on purpose," said Kizer, "because, as you know, we don't want guys to always be expecting it."
