And fighting good fighters makes this impossible?

    No.

If he would fight and beat the top names it will speed his career along.

But instead he is protecting himself, by taking the easy fights.

You may like that type of thing, but I don't.

And how long will we have to wait till he steps up?

So? I figure he mentioned Juanma only because he has a huge fanbase. Again, russell is building his career. Posters saying protected and ducking other guys sound like they really don't understand the business of the sport.

At this stage of his career Russell is doing just fine.

It seems like that's exactly what he's trying to do. He's ready for the big fights and big names so he's talking trying to get people to bite. Looks like a very promising young fighter to me.

I can't wait to see him against a top FW.

Very simple: 1) he turns down Dibb fo the TITLE. What does that tell you? 2) He turns down Franco for an ELIMINATOR and fights a setup instead. What does that tell you? Anone who says "Franco who?" needs to elaborate on how the last guy Russell fought was so famous then because Franco was and ELIMINATOR for the title!

Business of the sport for Russell:

Fight nobodies on HBO, to build up the hype and make easy money.

Call out the big names but never fight any of them

When another hype job or an top old fighter who is past his prime is available take the fight and maybe pick up a cheap title along the way.

You may fall for that, but thankfully more and more boxing fans are becoming wise to this.

physical talent is a great thing but it isn't everything. if you're a talented fighter you're supposed to look good against the cab drivers and taco vendors they put you up against.

the problems comes when those talented guys get fight somebody who will hit them, then they stop looking so good.

Bute vs Froch, Bute has tons of physical talent but Froch, who has almost no physical talent, destroyed him.

Broner had a hard time against Ponce de Leon.

talent that hasn't been tested doesn't mean much.

even DeGale vs Groves showed that

Turning down Dib for the title and backing out of Franco for an eliminator and saying he is better than Gamboa and calling out big names shows he is nothing but a bag of wind at this point.

                    Neither can I.

Anyone in the top 10 at least.

Whenever someone talks about speed and talent needs to realize that slower guys with less talent often beat those guys. They first have to fight someone with a pulse and see if they shine or get exposed. Timing beats speed and will beats talent many times.
