That was no minor injury. That was a severe injury. Even Tim Bradley wanted to bail out of the Pacquaio fight once he hurt his foot pretty badly. Fighting with a broken jaw, where your opponent can inflict even more damage, is not smart. It is very risky and ******. Ortiz shouldn't have had to stop it himself. The trainer, doctor, etc should have stopped it at that point.

Honestly if the jaw wasnt as severely injured as it was he would've continued, the severity is what made him stop the fight.
It's one thing to be courageous but another to be idiotic.Comment

ralph grumanFighters fight through injury all the f***ing time. That's why Ortiz is getting criticized, at the level of the sport he is at and with the money he makes, fighters are constantly fighting through serious injury. If fighters quit every time they had a serious injury we would rarely see an entire fight. For f***'s sake what sport do you people think you are watching?
I don't see anything about the fighter you mentioned. Nothing at all.

I'm pretty sure there are more, but I found that off of quick search.
With that said......I watch boxing. I understand and agree with you that fighters should fight through injuries, however there is a limit.
Broken jaws, imo, are the type of injury in which fighters should get a pass for (when they decide not to continue on).
Sorry, but I don't buy into that idiotic ideology that fighters should fight on no matter what. No one does that and everyone has a breaking point.Comment

Years ago I donated to Gerald McLellan. I got a painting of the man for that donation too.Yo Dunn....I think this is the first time me and you agree on something.
I would also like to add is that the same guys will bash fighters that quit, yet the ones that don't and recieve permanate damage.....they won't even donate a dime to.
Guys like McClennan, Benetiz etc had pretty decent size fan bases, and what has any of their fans ever done for them. Those guys are sitting around all messed up, broke , and no one gives a d@mn about them. They can't even afford the proper care, and when they finally die because of their injuries, there will be reports that there families don't even have money to pay for their funerals.
Fvvvvvk all of that. Boxers should look out for themselves as no one else will give a d@mn about them. That's why I don't blame any fighter for putting health before please some bone head fans.Comment

Come on fam...... Devon Alexander quit from a head butt and so did Nate Campbell, Zab Judah and many others. Getting your jaw broke is way worst. Didn't one of the Kitscho's quit on his stool because of his shoulder. Junior Witter quit because of his arm. There are fighters who quit for less because not all are willing to go out and risk it all. Just think if Margarito's corner would have saved his eye from Pac. I don't know why people are bashing Ortiz so hard. What do you expect? Dude is not built like that but he is in some pretty exciting fights.Juan Diaz didnt quit in the ring to finish Law School! LMFAO!!!!! If the sport is to rough for you....Try Golf! No wait. You could hurt your elbow!
People who who feel quitting in a fight is the right thing to do...shouldnt be watching fights. Fighters dont quit. Thats why as rules in Boxing are stated before each fight.... You can ONLY be saved by the Bell or not...and/or Only a Doctor or Ref can stop a fight, depending on where they are fighting and whos rules they are following.
Pnssies quit. Peroid! I guess Boxing has its fair share of pus$ies followers, I guess! Back at ya!Last edited by GRUSTLER; 06-26-2012, 03:48 PM.Comment

No Cotto didn't. He gave up on trying to win the fight.
That's why fighters like Fernando Vargas and Diego Corrales were so god dang special. Name one fight you ever saw them not trying to WIN the fight? NEVER. Whether they were outgunned or busted up those vato's kept fighting. Not running.Comment

I'm not one that thinks fighters should fight to the death, and I've never said I would have kept going, I'm not a professional boxer. But I disagree, I've seen enough fighters fight on with broken jaws, and Ortiz quitting against that type of fighter would do nothing for harm for his career.ralph gruman
