No, nothing like that. Abraham had a worse break and more serious surgery (22 screws and two plates for Abraham, 3 screws and one plate for "Vicious"). It had no effect on his career.

Many fighters have had broken jaws. I can't remember any of them having career problems afterward. You know what else I can't remember... any of them quitting. Not one.

I feel what you are saying but Ortiz could not tough it out but may have did the smart thing seeing how severe the doctor said his jaw was broken. Lopez was landing bombs on him at times, right on the button.

You might be right. You certainly seem reasonable, not like the Ortiz fan boys denying reality and trying to make this about "keyboard warriors".

But a couple of things...

The source saying that Ortiz could have died is Ortiz' manager, and the claim seems absurd. Simply put, I don't think we can trust anything this guy is saying. He has an agenda. IMO, he is in full spin mode.

It's a good point you (and others) have made about Ortiz taking many flush punches to the jaw. It's a lot harder to continue with a broken jaw when your defense is terrible. Could he have fought more conservatively and made the final bell? Or would the ref have asked the doctor to look at Lopez' eye? We'll never know.

Personally, I think that too many trainers don't do enough to protect their fighters. The Margarito-Pac fight is a good example. Marg had no chance of winning and was getting destroyed. Marg is not going to quit. He's not Ortiz. The vast majority of professional fighters refuse to quit in those situations. It's up to the cornermen to protect their fighter, to throw in the towel.

The Ortiz situation is completely different. He was not losing. He was not taking a one-sided beating. There was a point in finishing the fight - to win it. You are getting confused about people critizing corners for letting pointless, one-sided beatings go on just because the fighter wants to finish the bout on his feet. That has nothing to do with what happened here.

Wikipedia isn't a reliable source. But if you can show me a reputable link that confirms he had 22 screws and 2 titanium plates inserted than I can't argue against that...it would seem Abraham's injury was just as bad as Ortiz'.

Speaking from personal experience i had the exact same thing happen to me i didn't go to hospital for 2 days as i thought i had just lost a tooth turns out the tooth sized gap i had in my mouth was where my jaw was split open there was a hidden break on the side as well.

From a nutritional point of view i myself lost One and a half stone in body weight because when your wired up you cant eat you have to drink protein shakes, soup etc and even after the wires come out you still cant chew so you got to have all your food liquidized and mashed up i expect victor to lose a lot of muscle and body weight so any ring return will likely be a long way off but good luck to him i am sure he can come back from this.

Anyone ever seen a fighter quit from a broken jaw? I've seen a bunch of fighters suffer a broken jaw in a fight. I have never seen a single fighter quit due to a broken jaw though. Anyone ever seen it?

By the way, I wouldn't say Abraham's injury was "just as bad" as Ortiz'. It sounds like it was much worse.

The best way to get good info on Abraham's injury would be to get a German poster to look into it. I am sure they could find many German language articles.
