Comments Thread For: Merchant Feels Gamboa Should Have Fought Brandon Rios

The future of former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa got a little clarity on Thursday when it was revealed that the Cuban stylist had settled his legal dispute with his former promoter Top Rank.

The Las Vegas-based firm filed a breach of contract against Gamboa in March, after Yuriorkis bailed out on separate press conferences to promote an April 14th duel with former lightweight boss Brandon Rios, an obvious sign that he had no intention in pushing forward with the event despite Top Rank claiming to have given him $70,000 in advance pay.

Dumb thoughts by Merchant. Doesn't he know part of the deal to get the Rios fight was to sign a valid extension with Top Rank? How could Gamboa fight Rios and leave Top Rank at the same time...

He already signed an extension before the fight. Why would he pay a lot of money to buy out his contract if the contract was up?

That's untrue. That's only what Top Rank said & what they say is not true 97.35% of the time. These stats come from some regressions I made. Now being serious, we've been having some leaks from Gamboa's entourage in an hispanic (mostly cuban) boxing forum. And from day one, our sources have told us that Top Rank had nothing at all, that it was all blah blah, and that Gamboa wasn't even worried about it because he was extremely confident to win against them. That's why Gamboa has been so unworried lately, chillin with Money and all. He even has a fight relatively soon and it has been planned for a while now.

This is only rumors... Top Rank is prouder than that. The real version is probably that Top Rank dropped the charges because they couldn't win the case and asked Gamboa's team to not say anything about it. They probably didn't want to lose their face. You imagine the consequences for Top Rank if a fighter easily destroys them in court? They'd lose their reputation and respect, other fighters would follow.

Please stop with the stories. The SIGNED extension was part of the documents filed in court. Gamboa's team told us they offered to buy the contract out for a high sum and TR accepted. I know what the number is and nobody who thought they would win a case would pay that kind of scratch. Not that it was Gamboa's MONEY anyway because he wasn't the one who paid it out.

*** you ARUM...you was going to do to Gamboa what you did to Abril because you knew he wasn't happy with Top Rank and Ahmet Oner so they was probably going to screw over Gamboa and try to Cash Out On Him and then get rid of him but Gamboa was smart and avoided taking that fight because clearly he knew something was probably going to happen during that fight

as for Merchant...who cares what you think you old ***, stop acting like you care about Gamboa's career, but when you leave Bob Arum HBO will start to be negative towards you and criticize you for every little thing, the same will happen to Gamboa, they will continue to bring up the Rios fight and will hold that against him for most of his career and make it as if RIOS WAS THE REASON HE TURN DOWN THE FIGHT and not his Contract Situation with Top Rank

he had no reason jumping in the ring with a man that outweighs him 20lbs... asking him to jump two divisions and fight a guy who cant even make the weight is ludicrous, career suicide
