I am so glad you mentioned Ortiz. That is exactly right. I had people calling me who are not into boxing asking me "who is Ortiz"? Ortiz was not known at all to the general public and Mayweather did 1.2M. When the numbers came in all you heard was Mayweather did less than Manny's last fight and when the reason of Ortiz not being a household name it was dismissed by Manny fans! Now it is the same reason they are using for the lower numbers.First off - a little off topic, but I'm not going be like most people and bash Pacquiao for not doing over a million PPV buys. Even if Arum is exaggerating the 900k, which I don't doubt for a second, 700-800k is still VERY good, especially considering the fact that, like others have said, it was essentially only Pacquiao. I don't think people quite understand how impressive it is to sell that many PPVs because they've been spoiled into thinking selling over a million PPVs is normal when looking at those two.
That being said, it doesn't change the fact that Mayweather still consistently sells more. If you don't want to go based on the last fight, then just go by common opponents. More often than not Mayweather has outsold Pacquiao when going against common opponents. Mayweather-Ortiz also did better numbers, with Ortiz being the same level of attraction as Bradley is.
Whatever Manny sold he did a great job whether it was 700K, 800K or 900K sold. It is NOT fair to compare this fight to Floyd fight with Cotto as Cotto is a well know fighter. Please kill the nonsense with Canelo and Mosley. Canelo last PPV fight did horrible and Shane has never put cheeks in seats! That fight sold because of Floyd and Cotto.
But the bottom line is this, Floyd sales more, PERIOD! With common opponents he sells more (Oscar, Hatton, Cotto and Marquez). The numbers for the second Marquez fight and the Mosley fight are questionable to me.Comment

So would Bradley have been considered a "qualified" opponent for Floyd? Or is this another case of double standard of Floyd's opponents? That's the thing. Floyd always says, "it's business first" .... Floyd knew that Cotto will help bring in the numbers. Plus having Mosley and Canelo is an added bonus that represent different fan bases and therefore bring in more PPV hits.
but then Floyd fans turn around and say that Floyd has the PPV numbers without considering that Floyd thinks "business" before "truly qualified opponents".Comment

Pac fought Cotto too FIRST and didn't even do Floyd numbers. Floyd 85MIL, Pac 56MIL. No comparison.Comment

I'LL TAKE FROM THIS A COUPLE OF THINGS:
1. The numbers are unofficial until confirmed by HBO. This is the standard established by pac diehard fanbase aka, puga, pacboy, d4th, hugh grant, cgarcia etc.
2. Manny selling in the area of 900k with Tim Bradley is ****ing impressive and shows that at the top boxing is bigger than ever.
3. Its time to stop comparing the drawing power of floyd and manny. I, as much as anyone on this board, engage in the sometimes pointless back and forth but its really no longer a viable discussion. Floyd outsells Manny with comparable opponents. The comparison is not with floyd/cotto but floyd/ortiz. Can manny's fans please just stop the ridiculousness.
4. Anyone arguing for a 50/50 split please stop. Can we all set aside our feelings for either fighter and be reasonable. Lets just hope floyd offers 65/35 or stick to his 60/40 and get this fight made already.
5. In light of what JCC did on HBO, I agree with the poster that said Bob should have put his fight on the undercard. According to manny's diehard fanbase, putting a popular mexican fighter increases sales exponentially.Comment

I think Chavez Jr breaking the HBO ratings record for the past few years is better than addding a few PPV buys.Comment

I can see and respect that point. From an overall business standpoint, I disagree. If just 10% of the people that watched JCC brought the ppv at $69.95, thats 200k more ppv buys and $14 mil more generated. Also the comps and unsold tickets are probably sold.Comment
