Comments Thread For: Top Rank: We Reserved Sept. 15 First, Not Golden Boy

The stakes are very high for September 15th in Las Vegas. With only two miles of driving distance between them, two high profile pay-per-views will go head to head.

On one end, at the MGM Grand, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will defend his WBC junior middleweight title against former champion Victor Ortiz, provided he defeats Josesito Lopez this coming Saturday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Golden Boy Promotions will stage the event and Showtime pay-per-view will carry it.

GBP is pretty much F'd here.

Not only is Chavez jr a bigger draw (in both US and Mexico) but the quality of the fight is better too, to most people.

This is gonna be a ****ty ego battle between the two now.

Instead of spreading it out and having 2 awesome ppvs in one month where both promoters will make more money on their own dates we will have 2 on the same night and probably 4 straights weeks with no good boxing.

It's a better fight period. The Ring Magazine #3 Pound for Pound fighter in the world versus hungry young lion who happens to be the son of a living legend who is coming off the biggest win of his career.

Chavez gets decent numbers Texas, but the tickets are cheap as hell so the gate isn't that huge. I guess casino subsided tickets are the way to go.

Not gonna say who or what company. But was just told there's very little chance of a major carrier running two boxing PPV's on the same date

So this is, almost 100% for sure, a game of chicken between TR/HBO and GBP/Showtime. Because pretty sure only one will get the airtime
I think Showtime is more likely to back off since HBO has more resources.
