Vitali already scheduled his final fight against someone named Charr or something like that, and than he's retiring. Kind of sad if you ask me. Vitali will probably get in the HOF, but he's not even close to an ATG or Top 10 HW in my book. He'll get into the HOF, but he's not an ATG.

I agree, they can complain about it but in the end, it's only gonna do good to the popularity of the division and so the champions of the division. I bet Wlad & Vitali will watch this fight with pleasure.Comment

They didn't embrace Lewis for the same reason that they didn't embrace Rusedski - they didn't really regard him as British. And they did embrace him in the end, from the first Holyfield fight onwards.
The fact is that the Klits get viewing figures and live gates that Haye can only dream of, so the post I was replying to in my last post was ridiculous.
Also, the fact that Brits tend by and large to prefer all action fighters with relatively little skill like Hatton, to highly skillful but defensive fighters like for instance Herol Graham (who would have been a much better example to give for the point you were trying to make than Lewis) isn't a particularly positive attribute, IMO. It just shows they mostly don't appreciate the subtleties of the sport.
Plus Hatton's popularity (like Bruno's before him) had far more to do with the fact that people liked his personality than it did with his style. Bruno's style, if you can even call it a style, was awful. All he had was a decent jab and a lot of power. He had no skills or ring IQ at all. But the fans loved him for his personality. (Similar story with "our 'Enery" - although Cooper did have one tremendous near thing, the rest of his career didn't come close to justifying the adulation he received - but the public didn't really care about what he did in the ring, they just loved his personality.)
And they are the most insular fans in the world - even worse than the Americans. The fact that Haye vs. Audley was a bigger fight in the UK than Haye vs. Wlad was shows how hopelessly insular most Brits are.
They also mostly have no interest in the history of the sport. The number of articles I read after Calzaghe retired that gave a top 5 British fighters of all time list that didn't include anyone from before World War II was unbelievable. And I don't think there's a single British sports journalist who knows what a lineal title is, or who understands the difference between an alphabet title holder and a world champion.Last edited by Dave Rado; 06-13-2012, 09:38 PM.Comment
