I now question Jack Dempsey's place in boxing history......

I have learned that Jack Dempsey refused to fight black fighters...this makes me question how great he really was because he skipped a whole segment of the boxing population.

12/07/05 edit: I will give you an example. Say that a modern Heavyweight does not fight Ukranians, and for that reason does not fight the Klitchko brothers but beats everyone else in the division....does that fighter have the right to say he is the best in that division when there are potentially 2 fighters who may beat him?...see my point

    Look kid.

I don't want to insult your intelligence but this kind of stuff is all over the web. If you just learned that Dempsey refused to fight black fighters I suggest just putting a search out on this board, or on the world wide web.

It's just wasting bandwith and this has been debated profusely already.

That might explain why Dempsey actually signed a fight against Harry Wills, which was to take place on July 4th, 1925.

Don't blame Dempsey for not defending against a black fighter (which really, Wills & Kid Norfolk were about the only two possible challngers), blame Tex Rickard for not wanting a repeat of the Johnson/Jeffries race riots which took place only a few years previously...

Oh, and Dempsey did in fact fight a couple/few black fighters on his way up.

Jack Johnson also refused to fight black fighters. Do you question his place in boxing history.

even if he did, its not like it was entirely his fault. one thing that i think is still crap in boxing and any other sport, is the politics in sports. that takes over everything. so if he was payed not too fight them, and he took it, can u really blame him. i mean that was when every black person was looked down upon. now if u do that its a big deal, cuz ppl say everyones equal (even though u can c thts not tru in many areas)
