Just because a lot of the achieved more back then doesn't mean they are better than present day fighters. There is a difference between greater and better.

You saw that lead left hook he landed. Like Floyd does, shoulder roll, similar fighters. Both, very skilled.

And, Benton ring IQ was very high as well. He knew what to do. And, it's a reason why after his fighting days he became such a good trainer. Helped trained Whitaker, Holyfield, McCallum, Meldrick Taylor.

Damn right i love this era and i have been witnessed to some damn great fighters in this era and just cause a fighter fought in black and damn white does not mean they can beat the greats of this era.people watch a few damn old fights that their grand dad told them to watch and act like it is the damn gospel...hell yea there where great fighters back then but damn it there are great fighters from present day as well....it's like a fighter can't get props until he is old or dead............Hell when Sugar Ray Leonard was fighting he was considered a duck and a pre madana just like sugar ray robinson was.now years later they are warriors.they are fighters i have seen that would wipe the floor with some of these old school cats

I agree. And none of these fighters would be here or have this style if it wasn't for the predecessors, the same way other great defensive fighters like Toney wouldn't be here without fighters like Willie Pep, so on and so forth.

But I think a good level of his frustration comes from the fact that there are a lot of psuedo-boxing analyst/"experts" that tend to carry this pretentious aura based on their knowledge of prior fighters (which, the majority of times, is actually very limited, by nature or circumstance) and really do base their comments on a good amount of hyperbole and legend. Another part of larry's frustration obviously stems from the fact he has an obvious pro-Floyd agenda, lol, and everything said either directly or indirectly/subconsciously has an effect on the way his favorite fighter is perceived or rated by the General consensus.

To say SRR would've beat Floyd is just as ridiculous as saying Floyd would have beat SRR, feel me? That's a sure way to tell the difference between a fan of the sport who is here to appreciate, marvel and learn from it and others, and folks who are just here to wax poetic and hold a circle jerk mental ************ session

I hear you. But then again, just think of how adamant Roger Mayweather is in saying that his nephew isn't in Robinson's league. I do agree that their is some sort of condescending aura that some posters and pseudo historians like to wrap the old school with.

That said, I also think that the longer you watch boxing, the more you become like them . I can't help but watch welterweights today and note that Oba Carr would probably beat the living **** out of every welter fighting now but two or three. And see heavyweights while chuckling to myself thinking of what Lennox Lewis might've done to a David Haye. Or how Ricardo Lopez would've been considered a god--actually, a lesser version of Ricardo Lopez (Juan Manuel Marquez) is almost considered a god today for his skills. I'm not one to down today's boxers. Especially since so many of them fight like yesterday's version. Ironically, especially Floyd.

Possibly my favorite thread I've come across on here. Good points made by all sides. Stokely had the best post in the thread on my opinion, but was ignored.

And I don't believe Larry, or Carlos Baldomir himself, thinks he could beat Lamotta. That's just foolish, but doesn't completely detract from other valid points that he made.
