You know what's amazing? How many times have you seen an old fighter take a youngin to school only to have his age fail him? Who remembers how much trouble Evander Holyfield had with Larry Holmes? And realizing (seeing an old HW king versus a new one) that the old HW king had skills fighters could only dream of? The difference today isn't in the skill. It's in the athleticism.

Larry's a f***ing Hopkins fan. Thinks he is a top 20 or 30 ATG. Watching that old man do what he has done should make him realize how ****** a thread like this is.

I mean, do people know what the **** they're talking about? A champion for six of seven years. Threw over 100 punches a round and got stronger as the fight progressed. Threw EXCELLENT combinations. Heck, if that was Roy Jones throwing a triple left uppercut (like Tony did to Cotto) we'd be on our knees. Excellent body puncher. Sturdy chin. Aggressive. Could force any boxer to brawl with him. ****, he made Daniel Santos exciting. Power/cement in both fists. Underrated boxing skills. Knew how to cut off the ring. Incredible pressure-fighter. Experienced. Savvy. Average? That muther****er was downright scary in his prime.

Hell of a post. People too often confuse speed with skill. Similarly, slow handspeed = no skill.

Actually, this reminds me; a poster a few months ago said there was no difference at all between Margarito and Baldomir.

I can't speak for Larry but in my opinion Sergio Martinez would be the best in every era. And with that i mean he would be able to compete.

No not true, he was a solid beast, it takes skills to put pressure and impose your will. And, make your opponent to fight your fight. He was good at that. He was good at cutting off the ring.

Was his style cute in the ring, was he flashy, was defensive orientated? No. But, offensively did he have subtle skills? Yes he did. Had a nice uppercut too and solid body puncher. Margarito was good at fighting on the inside. By no means a bum skill wise.

But, again is what people presume to be skills. I have read that Oscar is more skilled than Chavez. Or, that he had better defense than Chavez Sr. Which is not true. Chavez sr defense on the inside, he could roll with punches, he could slip and duck punche, he would parry punches and also fight off the backfoot if needed to. While Oscar defense was just his feet and that's it.

I always thought of Margarito as crowd pleasing personally, but he wasn't a technically sound boxer and just because he wasn't terrible at a few things doesn't make him "skilled" to me. It is really more a "glass is half full/empty" thing. Slickness and flair are a bit heavily emphasized nowadays when it comes to "skill" but that has more to do with the merging of athletes, celebrity and pop culture. This is like the hall of fame thing, it is all subjective. I would prefer a boxer who is multifaceted and demonstrates ability in many areas over guys who are exceptional at a couple things but downright terrible in other areas. I'm arguing this in my own head as I type, but when I think of Margarito I don't see a well rounded "skilled" boxer.
