    Today's Boxing Problem

December 5, 2005: So today they run a small blurb on the internet where Lou Dibella says about Jermain Taylor:

After his second straight razor-thin conquest of Bernard Hopkins, WBC/WBA/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor is eying a tune-up fight in his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas. "It would be a crime to put Jermain in another tough fight without a breather after going 24 rounds with Bernard Hopkins," promoter Lou DiBella said. "We expect a fight with Winky by next summer, but Jermain deserves a rest. I'm going to line up something so his fans in Arkansas can come see him."

See? This is one of the problems with professional boxing. These guys are so coddled and protected today. Can you imagine if these guys today had to follow the schedules that the fighters of years gone by followed?? Sugar Ray Robinson fought Jake LaMotta twice in six weeks once and Marvin Hagler followed the war with Tommy Hearns with a fight against 25-0 (with 25 stoppages) John Mugabi. Jermain deserves a rest? So he will fight a professional fight but it will be considered a rest fight? Sounds like a can't miss TV happening there, huh? He deserves a rest? The fights were too tough? He deserves an easy fight so his hometown fans can see him bop out some overmatched opponent so he can look good in front of them? Here's a thought: Jermain is the middleweight champion of the world and that automatically means he is supposed to -it is his obligation- defend his titles against the roughest, toughest, baddest, meanest 160 pound men in the world. If you feel the grind and pressure of holding that spot is too much for him then why don't you just give the title back and fight some off-TV fights down in Little Rock, you know, "for the fans," and let two guys have an opportunity, two men who would give their left arm for a chance to hold that supposedly precious belt.

While I hate the coddling of fighters in a manner such as this, the thing I hate more is weight starving to fight smaller opponents and these bogus boxing comissions with alaphabet belts... that and PPV.

Well that has been a problem for a while now.Atleast there is a couple of old-school fighters left. The kind that doesnt duck anyone and run their mouth all over the place.

That is a good point and I totally agree with it. Win or lose, if you want to be the best, you have to be a warrior and fight the best. Taylor is one of my favorite fighters but he needs to fight Winky next. It can't be any tougher then fighting Hopkins again. If he loses, he loses! Come back and try again.

i agree. if he fights winky and loses, then the fact that he had a "rest" bout before that isnt gonna make a difference. its just one more lame fight that we have to sit through, and an extra 4 months that we have to watch a lame duck middleweight champ. if he wants to please little rock AK, have an open workout session and let the locals watch you spar or something. dont waste the time of other boxing fans with meaningless fights.

Wow, Taylor needs to fight a tomato can now after having beaten a fighter who is almost 41 years old in a fight where they mostly looked at each other.

Yeah, no ****. Those were (Well, I can't speak for the second, but from what I understand... not much different than the first) two of the lowest output fights I've ever seen. They threw what? 400 total punches COMBINED at each other? Come the **** on. Jermaine is a ****ing joke if he can't get in there with an opponent with a pulse after this.

Wasn't Tarver saying the same thing after beating Jones? That fight should have taken little to nothing out of him. He didn't even have to punch Jones that much until the late rounds.

A guy like Toney would take that fight, and, barring an injury, would be back in the ring with the best opponent he could get in a matter of four or less months. He had a bout scheduled for this month, but tossed it for more money and a belt shot with Rahman, which makes financial sense, really. Other wise he would have been back TWO months after pounding Dominick Guinn. Say what you will about either fighter, but they're two of the only guys who would fight him, and he is looking to take on the big guys. He's been calling them all out for a long time now.

**Ice, I see you didn't follow the schedules of Sam Langford or Harry Greb, guys with 300+ fights. Does that make you coddled?

Taylor just went 24 of the roughest rounds he may ever have. Why don't you see who he signs with next? Dibella says Taylor is gonna fight Winky next summer. What's wrong with that?

Why not? HMMMMM heres a thought, maybe because he ****ing earned it? He just beat Hopkins two times consecutively, give me a ****ing break.

Secondly obviously boxing has changed a lot,how can you compare Jermain to the Careers of fighters past, when boxing isnt the same as it was then.

I guess if Jermain Taylor wants to go fight a tomato can in front of his hometown fans after he fought Hopkins twice in a row I dont have a real problem with that.

Not that Im sold on Jermain but I do believe that he and his team should not only do what is best for the sport (they have) but they also should do what is best for them.

If fighting in Arkansas is gonna net Taylor a few million then why not?

I'll be critical when he begins to fight tomato can after tomato can but if he fights Hopkins twice, coupled with 1 tomato can and Winky Wright then how the **** can we *****?

ICEMAN-with all do respect you never were in an event like the one that Taylor fought let alone two in a very short period, in your opinion would a super fight let alone two tend to drain a fighter more as opposed to a regular fight? (if there is such a thing as a regular fight?)

ICE-I will be curious to hear your answer...
