Comments Thread For: Francesco Pianeta Beats Oliver McCall Over Ten Rounds

Brandenburg Halle, Frankfurt, Germany - Heavyweight contender Francesco Pianeta (26-0-1, 14 KOs) won a ten round unanimous decision over former WBC champion Oliver McCall (56-12, 37 KOs). The scores were 98-92, 97-93 and 99-91. McCall, 47-years-old and still very tough, took the fight on short-notice after the original opponent, Francois Botha, withdew with a training injury. Pianeta was the more accurate and busier fighter. McCall, showing his iron chin, walked through Pianeta's flush punches in several rounds and continued to come forward, but also showed moments of mental weakness when he simply allowed Pianeta to score without firing shots back.

It's sad McCall has to keep fighting. Has a better chin than Margarito IMO, up there with the all-time greatest chins, along with Hagler et al.

mccall is still competitive against everyone he fights. the last few years he has fought lance whitaker, franklin lawrence, timur ibragimov, damian wills, fres oquendo, cedric boswell & now pianeta. he also had a fight cancelled vs chauncey welliver(welliver fought bert cooper instead). in his late 40's he is fighting better competition then 95% of the heavyweights who are ranked higher. robert helenius is the only guy i will say who has fought better the last few years.

shows how poor the hvy wts are, boring & talentless when a 47 yr old is fighting, w/a good chin (his best quality) & off drugs, 4 now...A generation ago he'd have been nothing but a sparring partner...
