He may have lied to fight younger fighters in Mexico.

They do it all the time in Mexico, at least in futbol anyway.

They get on the Junior Teams and stick out like sore thumbs amid all the young developing players. That way they have better chance of being scouted whereas if they had played with teams their age they would've looked relatively unexceptional.

Perhaps Canelo is doing the Boxing version of this? It wouldn't change my opinion of him either way.

I wouldn't really care either, I get lying about age much more in team sports because playing for a contract is a bit different than in boxing. I guess it does make him look a bit more impressive though.

I know dudes are allowed to fight young in Mexico but I don't know how all that works, that may be another reason.

Like I said 21 or 24 he is still a young man, so other than him looking dumb it doesn't do that much harm and he still has a lot of years in front of him.
