Could Floyd go down the Roy Jones Jr.road?

The move back down in weight, in retrospect, was just dumb. Most fighters who tried that, like Chris Byrd, got their **** rocked too. But, Roy actually won his first fight back at 175 against Tarver, although I think that fight took a lot out of him.

That said, I think age played as much of a factor. He had been slipping for a long time and taking more punches. And cutting corners in the gym. Easy to think you're giving 100% in the gym once you've reached that stature. It can definitely happen to Floyd too, as hard as he works. He's been slipping. And I do remember a rare real moment from Floyd, during 24/7 Mayweather-Ortiz, him shaking his head and saying "I can't bull**** with this" as they wrapped his hands. It's a hard demon to shake, especially when you're getting a little older and have plenty in the bank. I love fights like this.

I'm with Reed as far as moving back down for the Tarver fight being very important for Roy. Winning the light heavyweight title back is huge, as was the actual fight, since people loved to pretend Roy couldn't pull out a tough fight. So I'm good with the move back down. After Tarver 2 though, it would have been great if Roy had realized he was about done and walked away. Hard to watch my favorite fighter become the laughing stock he is now in the ring.

Agreed on the weight. I do, however, believe he was aged. And agree on him retiring ages ago. Although I say he should have done it Lennox Lewis style, taken a hint from Tarver I and walking away before the beatdowns commenced.

Roy Jones Jr. was another if not a bigger boxing virtuoso than Floyd, everyone thought he was unbeatable, a boxing GOD. But age caught up to him all of a sudden against Tarver(who was an ever bigger mismatch than Cotto/Floyd).

I wouldn't be surprised if Saturday night Cotto shocks the world and KO's Floyd.

He's more likely to go down the Hopkins road than the RJJ one. Roy was a "virtuoso" in terms of reflexes and athleticism, and the skills he displayed were wholly based upon them. The two are not similar, Mayweather is much more fundamentally sound.
