Montiel was not better than Mares is now.

Old Montiel was on his way out, Hasegawa win was his last hurrah.

Abner is on a streak better than any streak Montiel has ever had.

Donaire is on a streak fighting guys coming off losses (Marquez, WV2) and midgets (Marquez, Sydorenko, Narvaez, Vargas, Montiel etc).

WV2 has a brawling style, less RING IQ and amateur/pro experience than Mares and he didnt get knocked out and he was coming off a loss.

But somehow Nonito is going to knock out Abner Mares?

        Don't think so.

Donaire by ko in a very fan friendly exciting fight. Mares has heart so it should be a war.

mares is not defensive enough to make donaire uncomfortable. he's too macho to shy away from slugging it out with donaire and that will be his downfall. donaire has more power and handspeed to overwhelm mares. his counterpunching is superior too.

Well, im not saying he cant be knocked out. Its boxing and anyone can get knocked out but I am saying the likelihood of that happening is low IMO and the odds of that happening get lower the more I think of it.

Nonito didnt knock out his last opponent who is a face first fighter and much less skilled than Mares. I say if he couldn't do it to WV2, I dont see him doing it to someone more polished like Mares.

Montiel fought Donaire all wrong. Don't think he believed Donaire hit that hard and payed the price for not boxing him. He was landing on Donaire but stayed too close to him. This may be the downfall of Mares, but Mares has better defense than Montiel but am not sure he has the one power ko that Montiel has. It would be good, but Mares will have to keep his defense tight. From what i seen of Donaire he's a very good fighter but i don't think working with Garcia works for him but i just started following his fights.

I thought WV2 fought very defensively in that fight, and was a big reason he heard the final bell tbh...
