Comments Thread For: Donaire vs Mathebula Bout Possible For 7/21, Says Arum

Rigondeaux vs Donoaire is a completely meaningless fight, but possibly a dangerous one. It makes no sense to have that fight right now. I could see Bob Arum wanting to build up Rigo a bit more before letting him fight Donaire. And he is. Arum is putting Rigo in the Pacquiao undercard for God's sake, something Donaire always wanted for himself. There's no hurry. Donaire said he intended to stay at 122 for a while.
You can argue that Mathebula is also a meaningless fight. And it is. But it'll also be a meaningless fight tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, and forever really. Might as well take it now and grab that IBF belt because the timing won't ever matter. On the other hand, Bob Arum promotes Rigo so he has a hand at building up an eventual Rigo vs Donaire fight so he can save it for later when it could be bigger. Rigo only has a pathetic 9 fight pro career with zero fanfare (outside of the internet) so you can't possibly expect him to put Rigo with Donaire so quickly.Last edited by DoktorSleepless; 04-18-2012, 02:39 PM.

This is a good fight... For ESPN. I really hope HBO refuses to buy Donaire vs any of those guys. Those fights are garbage for HBO/Showtime.
I don't want to see Donaire on premium cable unless he's fighting a world class fighter. Nishioka, Rigondeaux, or Mares(depending on how he looks this weekend) would be the best choices.

I think the case here is, let's go for the easier titleholder and "unify." Can someone disagree?

Donaire should really tell Arum off...and dictate to Arum to get the bigger fights; and not the fights with "who the F*UCK is that?" Arum is slow playing Donaires career, and the fighting fans know this...padding Donaires career with fight fans money!

So he is going after the weakest title holder in the division to unify.
And, why isn't this on the July 14 card?
HBO better not put this crap on their network.

I was OK with the Juanma-Gamboa build up. The problem with what happened there is that they stopped not only matching them in the same card, pretty much stopping the build up and Juanma got derailed.
