  • Should we have a 5% rule on ring weights?

The modern techniques of cutting weight for the weigh in then pilling in back on with protein shakes for fight time, is making a mockery of the weight division that are in boxing.

Fighter can come in on fight night 2 or even 3 weights classes above the division they are fighting in, and outweighing their opponents by a stone or even more in some cases.

Do we want boxing to becoming less about skills and more to do with who is best at cutting weight?

I propose that a fighter can only rehydrate 5% above the division that he is in or only to the next weight class.

Cutting so much weight can also be detrimental to the fighter himself and can also water log his body by taking on too much fluids.

This ruling would make boxing better, have boxers on a level playing field where skills, heart, power and speed are the important factors rather than size.

I've been impressed by some organisation that also hold weigh in at 30 days and 7 days before the fight that boxers have to meet so they don't have to kill themselves for the weigh in and they will be fitter and stronger for the fight.

Yeah, other than reverting to the old same day weigh ins, I'd say this is the next best thing to do.

I seriously hope they implement something like this soon, I mean, it's not unheard of for two guys weighing 140/147 lbs to fight for the lightweight title... it just doesn't make any damn sense

I'll say leave it alone personally, I'm not too fund of changes in sports. All that does is lead to too many 'what ifs. And trust me, it bothered me that Jr. was able to rehydrate to 180 against Rubio, and Rubio to me was more skilled than Chavez. If Chavez is able to come in at that weight again, I wouldn't like any MW's chances against him, not even Sergio's.

British Board have check weights through out during the lead up...
This prevents crashing weight loss but not against weight gain.

If Chavez Jr wasn't taking drugs to make weight that probably wouldn't be a problem.

The whole point of the weight division is to have fighters on a level playing field when size is not major factor.

This situation we have now allows significant size advantages, as well as making some fighters dangerously cut weight.

Having a limit on the ring weights as well as weigh-ins during the month before the fight will make the fights about skills and not about size advantage.

Fighters being dehydrated and getting brain damaged or dying in the ring as a result.

Boxing is a lot of white men watching two black men beat each other up.
