Lewis didn't "make the decision to stage his last fight".... It was KLITSCHKO who made that decision for him. And if he was "afraid of that", this only means that it was already like that whilst HE was boxing, but that was the way he liked it. Never mind his after-fight intervi ws, in many other interviews what he was constantly saying was that the division was good, but he was so much better that it just seemed to be bad. Does nobody remember that after 10 minutes of sickening glop he would always call himself "A PUGILIST SPECIALIST", and to hell with correct grammar.
By the way, I don't think that Lewis, even so stilted and carefully pontificating as he is publicly, ever said "they will", "I will", "I do not" in his whole life. He says "they'll", "I'll", and "I don't", like we do. A "made by hand" report.
Nobody who ever saw most of Lewis' fights after being KO'd by Rahman would have called them "exciting". And quite true, as someone has said, heavyweight boxing doesn't lose any potentially good fighters to either golf or tennis. Most pro tennis players of all standards, probably don't weigh much more than about 170 lbs. Any potential heavyweights would be in basketball and football. Maybe MMA. And probably not basketball either.
I believe that a reporter will have, say a 10 min. interview, full of typical Lewis cliches, and then, for the next couple of weeks, dole out a couple of sentences every day or two, making a "report" around the central core.... which is why we get a lot of rehashing and switching headlines on the same ite, with very little "news". No agency can afford to pay for chasing down a fighter so as to be able to quote 2 sentences of mostly non-news.
Like a storekeeper having "stock" on the shelves.
