what a disgraceful snob that guy is. anyone who scored Sturm-Macklin 116-112 in favor of Sturm like Ramirez did either has no integrity at all or is a complete fool who should be banned from officiating fights anyway. i must have missed the press conference in which he apologized to Macklin for robbing him of his victory and the title belt

I dont know if Ramirez gambles or not but i dont like him that much. A couple of years ago a program was started here were a convict could go out and fight professionaly.

The first one was Waldemar Adorno a convicted murderer. He got a lot of press attention and had hopes of making it on the pro ranks. The whole idea was depending on Waldemar's sucsess and there was a lot of people opossed to the plan. Most said, if you let a pro boxer go out to box why not let a convicted barber go out and work too, also that as a murderer he did not deserve so much praises and attention etc.

Anyway Ramirez was the ref and ended the whole thing with a first round stoppage so quick that made me sick. Couldnt help to think he let his own opinions about the program into the fight and took matters in his own hands. It killed the momentum and it will never be the same. If Waldemar had been fed up a tomato can and went on to a decent run im pretty sure many lives would have changed in prisson.

Wow. That's a fascinating story on several levels. I could understand giving some guy on a relatively minor conviction a chance to fight as a pro, but a murderer? That's a bit much. And that public opinion you cited makes a lot of sense. Why should a con get a chance to box, but not cut hair?

Years ago, I remember watching a documentary about world jails. From what I recall about the P.R. jail they profiled, the inmates looked like they ran the joint. It was like one big party, with guys playing congas and chillin' out. It's no surprise that the government would conceive of such an idea as a work-release program for a convicted murderer. (By the way, when they profiled a jail in China, the inmates were as soft as baby-poo. The jails in Russia? Those guys seemed as hard-core as the worst prison movie you've ever seen.)

Ramirez stopping the fight before it even got off the ground was quite unprofessional. I don't agree with the program, but I agree with you: it wasn't the ref's place to take matters into his own hands regarding a public project.

He's a worse judge than a ref, as you pointed out w/Macklin...terrible score...but WBA/WBO lets these guys officiate 4 them & they grab the $$ & go...another few like this are Weisfeld and Levi Martinez, belong to 3 organizations...
