Also, consider; Abril is a very new interim champ, and isn't it natural that he would attend a very important matchup in his own division if he could, to challenge the winner? Entirely reasonable.
What you've read is a statement issued on Gamboa's behalf. Yuri doesn't speak English (or at least not well enough to issue a statement as articulate as the one published). Gamboa's feelings about the contract, in English (if he ever really made them known), would've been voiced through an interpreter.

I've read "statements" and "comments" on this site, supposedly made by a Cuban fighter, that were almost certainly not made by them. I don't see why Yuri's "happiness" about Top Rank's terms should be any different.

"Gamboa talked a lot of trash?" As far as I know, all Yuri said was he wanted to fight Brandon Rios. He said he wanted to fight Manny Pacquiao, too. Or did he? Were his promoters out there beating drums? But let's assume it was Gamboa's idea to challenge Rios (and I'm not saying it wasn't), what has Yuri said that might be labeled "trash"?

I have seen and heard Gamboa on numerous occasions. He comes across (in Spanish) as fairly well-spoken, certainly far more well-spoken than Rios is in English. Yuri is reasonably articulate and business like. He doesn't talk "big", doesn't make threats and certainly doesn't curse. I do not know Gamboa to talk "trash."

Whatever, he ducked Rios after he called him out, end of story. Rios will now go on to massacre Abril.

Sigh. I'm just bitter because I bought tickets to this fight and now I get stuck with this. Could have gotten the refund but I'll be in town regardless.

TR would give Gamboa no shot at a decision if they knew if he was leaving

Actually, he turned thirty on December 23.

Gamboa disappointed a lot of people with his move (myself included). He may or may not have made a terrible career decision (we'll soon see about that). But the man doesn't strike me as an idiot. I've seen and heard several Spanish-language interviews with Yuri. He's not your stereotypical meathead athlete. Gamboa gives me the impression that he's ambitious and unusually interested in the business-side of his sport.

Yuri started his professional career very late, due to being trapped in his native Cuba throughout his formative years. I'm sure his actions are based on a sense of urgency, knowing his prime earning years will soon be behind him. If Gamboa made a poor business decision, he'll have to live with it. But the same way the fans won't enjoy his wealth, neither will they share his misery. Ultimately, Yuriorkis has to think for and about himself.

                geeze ......

Yo, All you ****en Gamboa haters?????

Gamboa decided to fight Rios ..... come time for bout' agreement Top Rank slipped in the "Hey Gamboa, we're gonna extend your promotional contract for 2 years, along with Arena box"

After Mayweather's attorneys disected that... (yes, Gamboa is already defecting to Mayweather promotions, but we all know that already)

...... Mayweather's attorneys said HELL NO Gamboa, don't go through with it, Top Rank & Arena are gonna own you for 2 MORE years.

I think we all(the smart ones anyways) would have done the same exact thing.

So why all the hatin on Gamboa??? He did the right thing! Period.

If TR prolongs this, it'll hurt Gamboa much more than TR.
