A lot of people seem to think that confrontation in Miami was a set-up. I'm not saying it was, but I've seen the video on Youtube and it appears a little questionable. Also, while it's not su****ious that Abril was there (I imagine a pro boxer living in Miami might want to check out the press conference), Richard just happened to step up without hesitation when Gamboa no-showed? Hmmm....

I don't know anything about Abril except the limited footage I've seen and his info on Boxrec, but he appears to be a decent boxer. His record seems a little deceiving. The two loses he suffered were SDs against solid opposition -- Hank Lundy and Breidis Prescott -- and he won his last fight against Miguel Acosta. Richard is tall for a lightweight (5'11") and he seems awkward. While I totally expect Brandon to win this fight, it might turn out to be more entertaining than we now imagine.

yeah it did, right? could be a set up, wouldn't doubt it. i mean it's top rank. you never know. and what's interesting about abril's losses is it's always one judge who had it completely wide for the other guy. it might have been a close fight, i didn't see them, but one judge in each fight jobbed him.
he upset acosta, he can do it again. rios might have too much power for him but he has flaws that can be taken advantage of. not sure if abril will be the one to capitalize on them. we'll see. this fight should be interesting though.

Good observation. It seems to happen a lot, though: one judge diverges from the other two who see it about the same way.

Every time I've seen that press conference video, Brandon cracks me up. He jumps up and says, "You want to fight me? There's my manager, right there! Talk to him!" Then Abril repeatedly tells Rios, in Spanish, "I'm gonna bust your ass." I dunno...it just seems a little fake.

yeah it does, like some WWE type stuff or something. what i keep laughing at is how when abril pushed rios, it was like he pushed off of him and was ready to get pulled away. he dipped fast, and then he was standing like a couple feet away from rios with basically one guy holding him and a bunch making sure brandon didn't get close. then like a minute or so after they were all cool about it giving interviews and talking to people. it seemed set up to me. if it was real, it would've been chaos and robert garcia wouldn't just been standing back doing nothing with a grin on his face.

Bro, it's like you're reading my mind! I observed all of that. I mean, maybe we're reading too much into it; but all those things seemed somewhat unrealistic to me. Robert would look over at Brandon almost like he wanted to laugh. I dunno, maybe this is a common occurrence in "Bam Bam's" world.

I can see it being both ways. I could see Top Rank having an idea that Gamboa was going to do this so they staged it as a backup plan.

I can also see someone like Abril thinking that he may have a shot at beating Rios since they have a common opponent in Acosta and maybe thinking that he shows up and makes a scene at the press conference he might get lucky to get a break down the road that he may not otherwise get. With Gamboa not showing up, he seen a chance to get in Rios face and having a real shot at making a fight with Rios.

maybe, rios is pretty crazy. but an unfamiliar dude coming up to him, getting in his face, and then shoving him. i think rios would've snapped, especially in front of all those people. haha, i think we just carefully observed it for what it was and just didn't buy into the little hype it created. it is what it is. abril better come to fight and be looking to upset rios. it would suck if he just came to pick up a paycheck or fold when the pressure was put on him. i'm going to try and watch some of his fights before the fight, to see what he's about. did you watch the acosta fight? i looked it up but only found highlights.

Interesting points. I certainly can't argue with them. It's possible that Abril (or someone in his camp) had a light bulb go off in his head and jumped on the opportunity to call Rios out. Doesn't seem likely to me, but it is possible.

There's very little footage of Abril out there. I don't think you'll be too impressed by what you see. Richard is a decent fighter, but he has no power. You need some pop to keep Brandon from walking right through you. Abril's going to have to use every ounce of skill he possesses to keep from getting starched by Rios.

Yes, I saw the Acosta fight (and just watched the highlights). Miguel was winning the first half of the bout, but then he got pulled into playing Brandon's game and got pummeled. Rios has to be out-boxed; there aren't too many guys that can go toe-to-toe with him and survive. It's easy to say what Acosta should have done, but it's another thing to execute. It seemed to me that Miguel let his pride get in the way, but it may be that he was just tiring and couldn't move effectively anymore. The highlights tell the story.
