  • Buddy McGirt Stoppages

I for one think Buddy's an excellent trainer its just that he trains a lot of B- fighters and they sometimes lose when they step up to fight A-fighters. Unfairly the loses his fighters suffer are sometimes blamed on him and he is called a bad trainer for his fighters losing. Remember he resurrected Gatti's career and if it was not for Buddy Gatti would not have had a 2nd half to his career. He also engineered Roy Jones 1st (real loss) loss to Tarver.

Buddy has had to throw in the towel more than a few times for his fighters. One question I wanted to pose was does anyone think that Buddy is doing this prematurely and since he is a former fighter he is too worried almost to the point of being a bit paranoid that his fighter might get severely hurt if he does not stip the fight. Here is a list of fights as a trainer that Buddy stopped: Gatti vs Mayweather (I thought was a good stoppage) Hatton vs Malignaggi, Martinez vs Macklin, Lamont Brewster vs Wladimir Klitschko, Gatti vs Badlomir. Malignaggi fired Buddy for stopping the fight and Macklin said he could have continued and wanted to continue. There may be a few more, but I will leave to anyone else who wants to comment and maybe add a fight that I may have missed. My opinion is he is just unlucky and he has been forced more often than not to stop the fight on behalf of his fighters. Any thoughts?

At least this one was a good stoppage. Macklin said he was OK to continue, but the truth is that he was hurt and letting him go on for another round would've been imprudent, Martinez was going to get a brutal KO if they allowed Macklin to continue.

Some of his stoppages were questionable, not this one though. Macklin was being beaten from pillar to post after Sergio turned it up in round 7 or 8. No need to take further damage when there's virtually zero chance you'll win this fight.

i agree with the stoppage. mack was visibly a beaten man. martinez's monster left was landing at will to his dome, it was only a matter of time. but he didn't come to lay down against the middleweight champ and put up a great fight. i take my hat off to mack the knife.

Why would you bet against Martinez fighting someone other than Mayweather?

I didn't bet against Martinez, I bet that Macklin would last till the end of the of the 12th round, all I needed was 3 more minutes.

It's the right thing to do. Lasting a few secs longer in a fight is so insignificant compared to living with pugilistic parkinson's for 50 years...
