    Macklin getting paid $1.5 million

Wow, I wonder if this number is correct. I find this very surprising. Maybe it will include the gate?
Yet in defeat, came a victory of sorts. With his profile enhanced, by virtue of the universal outrage over the decision rather than the excellence of his performance, Macklin was catapulted into HBO’s thoughts, resulting in the broadcaster forking out a small fortune to screen his challenge for Sergio Martinez’s world title.

Though he will be generously paid – Macklin’s $1.5million purse is the highest any Irishman has received for entering a ring – the money will be hard earned because the Argentinean champion is bettered only by Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in boxing’s pound-for-pound rankings.
In some other interview, Dibella said he offered HBO a fight between Martinez vs Andy Lee for a quarter million less, but HBO still preferred the Macklin fight.

Why not? If the Theater holds 6,000, maybe 5,500 will be there to see Macklin.

Macklin is very popular with New York's Irish community. His cousin even is a bartender at a bar across the street from there.

Not bad. No wonder he turned down Sturm.

I have a very, very difficult time believing that. I'm close to saying that's gotta be a blatant lie.

Maybe he has a regional fanbase in NY, but he's never fought in the states before and the only time he's been on American tv was in EPIX (not many people have this channel and I doubt that many streamed it). I guess the they're paying him that much because it's hard to find a credible and marketable opponent for Sergio. I read Daniel Geale was offered a million before Barker was brought in.

Still, Martinez highest HBO payday was 1.5 million so I find this number suspect. And this article only seems to be talking about what HBO is paying, not including the gate.

You also have to factor in that Macklin is hugely popular in Great Britain and is probably getting a hefty fee for his appearance on Sky Sports. Macklin has even worked as a commentator for them in the past.

Then there are sponsorships, for a fight of this magnitude, he could get perhaps an additional $50,000 to $75,000.

HBO money, who knows what he'll get. But it won't be his only stream of income.

I was surprised that Martinez was the crowd favorite against Barker in Atlantic City. The venue wasn't packed, but he had about 80% of the crowd's support.
