Actually they don't, no taxing institution does this. They make their own calculations, then send you a notice of assessment, usually for a higher amount than you've paid, and you have the option of either paying it, or filing a dispute. You can deal directly with the tax people or, as in the case of people in a large way of business like MannyP, have representation to put your position to them. If the Tax people don't like it, they they threaten you with prosecution, and you either pay, or appear with your evidence in court.i wouldn't know, since i don't personally know the guy. nonetheless, at least in the U.S., the IRS aren't after manny's arse. the issue with the BIR though is a different animal since they aren't like the IRS who would crucify you if you have paid a dollar less than what they calculated.Comment

The payment of the right amount of taxes is not the issue. He is not being sued for underdeclaration with intent to evade payment of correct taxes. He simply failed to obey summons which by itself is punishable. It's just like Gamboa failing to appear during the presscon. Nothing really serious about it. Once he submits the requested documents the charge is gone. You mean you'd want him to get jail time just for not paying the right taxes, in spite of already being a model tax payer and being one of the biggest tax payer in the region at that?
That's rather harsh.
Manny's already proven to be a good tax payer. I'm sure that he's simply been negligent in checking that he paid the right amount.Comment

Haters will hate
Seems to me that none of you actually know any of the facts, but are just commenting on the grounds that you just simply dislike that man. None of you know his deal with Top Rank or Bob Arum, none of you know the facts about his taxes, so why comment on something you truly have no knowledge of? If you dislike the man, fine, but it seems like a lot of you people are just being hateful and jealous. Rumors are just that, rumors, and until any of you actually come up with his contract with Top Rank or his Tax forms just please keep your hate to yourselves.Comment

Yes Dan. He is in effect being cited for contempt for failure to obey summons requesting from him some financial documents that would aid the tax people in determining his tax liabilities for the year in question, if there be any. To be charged for tax evasion, it must be shown, after the examination of his financial documents, that he made an underdeclaration of least 30% of his income in his tax return. Anything below that, the liability would only be civil ( meaning he has to pay the deficiency ) and not criminal.Comment
