Maybe so but we would never know what could of happened if he served. Sorry I just got not sympathy or respect for people like that. People are going to get all sensitive here but it's my opinion and it's this is something that's never going to change. Just FYI he was a GREAT boxer, probably the greatest or top 3 but as a person, I dislike.
You have a double standard. Both Washington and Jefferson owned ******, is that patriotic? It has no real bearing on their legacies because at the time they thought it was ok and they were doing the right thing. Ali also thought he was right and doing the right thing. I personally would have preferred he went into service. But I don't begrudge him because he didn't. Why should he have been obligated to fight or represent a country that treated him as a second class citizen in a war he disagreed with?

Washington helped this nation be free from the rule of Britain and Jefferson was a founder of our Constitution. I won't go further cause that will make people even more sensitive, specially with the second class citizen thing and slavery.

I do begrudge him and if I was a real hater of him I would try to discredit anything he does but that's not the case since I've said he was a great boxer. I just don't like him as a person. No double standards here.

Good ambassadors to the sport like Foreman and Marquez. I don't recall them having any serious issues inside and outside the ring. I think Louis also didn't cause any drama or hit women like Jack Johnson and his victory vs the Schm(German dude/can't recall name) was major at the time. Plus I think he served.

Ali helped his country by being on the forefront of racial equality. Why is one better than the other? All took bold stances for what they believed in and stood up to things they thought unjust. So I'll ask again...what makes one better than the other?

fighting a war in vietnam has nothing to do with protecting america and ali was smart enough to know that. he wasn't going to be a sheep that the military paraded around as propaganda to further their pro war cause. that was the best thing he ever did in his life. better than anything he did in boxing. a real american stands up against tyranny, they don't go along with it and pretend it's ok because their government says so. that's called ignorance.
