The Take: Much has been made of the closeness of the Marquez fight, with debate still raging about who fans and pundits thought won (if they didn’t score it even). Comparing only how Pacquiao has done with Marquez in three tremendous fights versus a Mayweather who dominated Marquez, Mayweather has the edge. Pacquiao for now maintains the top spot because there’s more to his resume than Marquez and because how each did with Marquez is no firm indication of how Pacquiao-Mayweather would go. Since Mayweather’s win over Ricky Hatton in 2007, he’s been in various states of retirement and vacation more than in the ring, going 3-0 with one knockout. In the same span, Pacquiao is 9-0, was more impressive versus both De La Hoya and Hatton than Mayweather, and picked up three wins (Clottey, Margarito, and Cotto) that vastly outpace Mayweather’s Ortiz win. It’s more than enough to hold the top slot for now and, hopefully, an actual fight is coming in 2012 to settle the issue once and for all
I gotta be honest here, the reasoning sucks.
1. Theres more to his resume than Marquez. PFP is a yearly ranking, not resume based.
2. Pacman was indeed more impressive over DLH. But which DLH was the better fighter? Floyd's was a champ at a healthy weight. Manny's was half dead taking IV on fightnight.
3. Pacman's win over Hatton was more impressive, but he was ko'd before.
4. I guess 1 could agrue that Pacman's 3 wins over Clottey, Margarito & Cotto are better than Floyd's over Ortiz, (if you combine them). But single handedly floyd's wins over Marquez, Mosley & Ortiz absolutely bosses on Pacman's 3 wins of Cotto-Margarito & Marquez all at mannyweight. Thats a fact btw, (the mannyweight part).
5. I think it's a laughable excuse to hold the #1 spot. Pacman's last 2 years were trash & undeserving of top pfp those years because resume should not define yearly pfp.
