Life ban a possibility for Chisora

Dereck Chisora could face a life ban from boxing following his shocking post-fight brawl with heavyweight rival David Haye in Munich on Saturday night.

Chisora arrived back in England on Sunday night after being freed by German police without charge, but officers have yet to speak to Haye after he quickly disappeared following the unsavoury scenes at the Olympiahalle venue, where Chisora had earlier suffered a points defeat to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.

Asked whether a life ban was a possibility for Chisora, British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Of course it is. The board have many powers - they can fine, they can suspend and they can withdraw a licence. There are many powers to them but let's just get there first before we speculate what we're going to do."

Haye does not have a BBBofC licence, having officially retired in October, so the governing body is unlikely to be able to sanction him, but they will continue their investigations into the weekend's events.

Smith added: "I'm on my way to the office. I have to speak to the chairman of the boxing federation and the German police, the authorities, to see what the situation is with regard to them over there, and then obviously take the appropriate action.

"I will have to gather all the information from those authorities and put them before the main board of control.

"I've spoken to a number of stewards already and I've spoken to the chairman on a number of occasions, and I'll put something out as soon as possible today, but it certainly will entail a hearing, a disciplinary calling - certainly for Mr Chisora because he is a licensed boxer. David Haye is a retired boxer - he's no longer a licence-holder with us."

Chisora also courted controversy with his pre-fight antics, slapping his 40-year-old opponent at the weigh-in and then spitting water into brother Wladimir's face in the ring.

Former WBO cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson believes Chisora should be banned, telling Sky Sports News: "He needs to be controlled. He needs to know that if this is what he's going to do, if this is how he's going to act, there's going to be consequences - not a fine... ban him, suspend him, do something. Try to take his licence off him.

"He needs be controlled. Obviously there is no control because still things like this happen.
    "

I don't like the guy but a lifetime ban isn't warranted in this case!

I really detest the way this has been reported in the British media. Anyone would think these have been completely unprecedented events. You can't judge boxing by the same moral compass as other mainstream sports, this isn't football or cricket. It's the nature of the beast that this kind of thing will happen occasionally, that's boxing. Dereck has stepped too far on this occasion, but a slap on the wrists will suffice, it makes no sense at all to deprive the fans.

And above all else, it was bloody entertaining!

You guys act as if this is the first time he got in trouble with the commision.
                    -kissing fighters incidents
                    -biting fighters
                    -domestic abuse
                    -slapping fighters
                    -spitting on fighters
                    -brawling outside the ring

Probably left something out. How many more chances are you gonna give a guy?
