That`s not how self defense is defined.
Self defense in laymen terms is the LAST RESORT of an UNAVOIDABLE SITUATION.
What David did was NEITHER.
Knowing well in advance that this person wants to start something with you, but you decide to show up to the scene anyway is not avoiding the situation. Furthermore, there were hundreds of people in there to intervene, if David felt truly felt threatened (and actually didn`t want to just punch him in the face because he was angry), he could of EASILY walked away. All he would of had to say was `Get this lunatic away from me, Im not fighting anyone`
Bottom line: If David didn`t want to fight, he didn`t have to.
He was looking for a fight and he threw the first punch.
