Mayweather uses his right elbow as an invisible infrared tripwire to blast counter right uppers when left hooks get close to his elbow, or opponents are trying to hook for the body. He personally explains the concept in this video below.
This is going to be troublesome for Cotto seeing as his main tool up close would be the left hook to the body, and he's always been vulnerable to uppercuts which is icing on the cake.
Cotto's jabs won't be no match for Mayweather's variety of jabs: stick to the body, measuring jab, standard head jab, etc. Anyone who has watched the Mayweather-DLH fight closely will see that Mayweather actually won the jabbing battle.
Honestly, I think Mayweather will be ready for Cotto's hook. It's Cotto's jab I'm interested in seeing. He's got a pretty good jab, and from what I can recall from the DLH fight, Mayweather seemed to get hit with the jab more than anything.
I'll explain why: Because Cotto's left hook isn't nearly as effective as it was at 140, and he throws fewer body shots as well. It could be because his power isn't the same at 154 as it was at 140, but for whatever reason he doesn't go to the body like he did at 140. Mayweather's straight right-hand is his most effective punch, in fact he throws it more frequently at 147 than he did at 135-140.
