MANILA, Philippines - Is it Floyd Mayweather Jr. himself who’s behind all those nasty tweets?
Manny Pacquiao’s chief adviser, who’d been personally in touch with Floyd Mayweather over the past few weeks, doesn’t think so.
“I’m not even so sure Floyd is the one twittering on his own account,” Michael Koncz told The Examiner in San Antonio, Texas, yesterday.
“A lot of certain celebrities hire people to do that,” he added.
Over recent weeks, Mayweather has gone to the social networking site to air his feelings on Pacquiao, and most of the time they’re not sweet.
“Step up, punk,” Mayweather tweeted once as he dared the fighting congressman from the Philippines to take on him on May 5 in Las Vegas.
And when negotiations fell through a few days ago, Mayweather came up with another one-liner that went viral the moment “he” punched the enter key.
“I’m fighting Miguel Cotto on May 5th because Miss Pac Man is ducking me,” he said.
Pacquiao, all the while, has kept his cool, saying he’s moving on to fight someone else because Mayweather refused his offer of a 50-50 split of the purse.
“Kahit sino basta boxer (Anybody who’s a boxer),” was all he said.
Pacquiao has yet to comment on reports that his promoter, and Koncz, are close to sealing the deal regarding a fight with the undefeated Tim Bradley on June 9 in Las Vegas.
Koncz said he hopes that a decision will be made in the next 48 hours, and soon an announcement from Arum.
“Again, I’m still in the middle of discussions with Bob on that and we’re looking at all of our options and until it’s final I don’t want to say.
But we’ve talked a lot about Timothy Bradley. I plan on talking to Bob again tonight, I had a meeting with him yesterday, and then I’ll relay everything to Manny tonight. Hopefully we can have everything done by tomorrow night,” Koncz told The Examiner.
On Mayweather, the Canadian adviser to the most exciting fighter today, had this to say.
“When I met with Floyd four of five times, I’ve got to give him credit, he pleasantly surprised me. He was very professional, very respectful, [but] it didn’t work out,” he said.
“I thought we made a reasonable, fair offer. The last offer that was given to him was a fifty-million guarantee with a 45/55 split, with the winner taking the extra 10 percent. He had other plans obviously so I wish him luck and we’re going to move on. We’re not devastated by the fact that we’re not fighting Floyd.”
