It is a great day to be a boxing fan. One of the sports icon's announced his next big fight and it is against a worthy opponent. Two big names getting together in the ring always makes for electricity. People will down play this fight and say Cotto is shot or it should be Pacquiao blah blah. I have to be honest this fight was on my mind back in 2008-2009. Around the time the welter weight division was stacked.

This is truly a great day for boxing fans. Shame is that these days are far and few in between. I was reading an article about inactivity in boxing. I know that these big names get a lot of money for a fight so it is hard to get dates on TV, find a location to host and raise the money that these giants in the sport want. It makes for a catch 22 for a lot of these athletes. The problem is that we have to wait too long before we see another good or big event. People tend too loose interest. Gone are the days of fighters putting on the gloves 4-6 times per year.

Floyd Mayweather has only fought 5 times since 2007
Manny Pacquiao has fought 9 times since 2007
Miguel Cotto has fought 8 times since 2007
Antonio Margarito fought 7 times since 2007
Juan Manuel Marquez fought 8 times since 2007
Bernard Hopkins has fought 7 times since 2007

Six of the sports biggest names in the past four years none of them average more then 2 fights a year with the exception of Pacquiao but he is only 1 fight over the average. Then the promoters wonder why the sport is suffering.

I know there is plenty of buzz on the boards today with Mayweather announcing the Cotto match but this is relevant to the subject on the boards right now. 55 views and not one single comment?

      I wouldn't call Rubio a "worthy" opponent.

I am starting to remember why I stopped posting here. You have brainless wonders that cannot converse about an intelligent topic.

yeah, you know it does suck that the big names don't fight often, and even a lot of the semi big names or not so big names. But that's the way the sport is now. It's not like the old days, that's for sure. I guess one of the positive things about that is it probably extends fighters careers.

regardless, that's why I'm a fan of like 100 fighters haha. I don't rely on just the top 6 to fill by boxing fix. I rely on the sport as a whole, I'll watch Floyd down to some bum on Friday Night Fights and everyone inbetween.

It's a great point. Mayweather is the absolute worst for inactivity - it really does feel like each time he fights is nothing more than him topping up his bank account. He gets to fight once a year - and because it's so infrequent, it turns into this big event. I guess it's a good policy in that he preserves his health while still making tons of money but I can't help thinking of the fact that he wasted what was left of of his prime.

            Haye's inactivity was ridiculous too.

One of my favourite fighters, Chad Dawson, is a big culprit. He wasted about 3 years fighting and then re-match Tarver and Johnson.

I understand boxing is a rough sport and so physically demanding, from the training camps to the fights. But inactivity really annoys me.

Best solution. Only problem is that the sport as a whole seems goddamn inactive - we have these huge long stretches of not much going on - followed by the inevitable clash of two big fights, one on HBO and the other on Showtime.

Honestly, this sport is so ****ed up in so many ways.

those stretches (usually weeks) of no big fights I don't worry about because boxing is a year round sport, whereas the NFL and other sports you gotta wait a long time for the new season to start.

But even then, there is always international fights too. There are always fights on somewhere in the world from japan to thailand to anywhere in europe to mexico, you can find something if you really need your fix!

if not, I'll throw in some old fight I've been wanting to see to further educate my boxing history knowledge. And you really can't do that with the NFL or the NBA or whatever, it's hard giving a flying **** about who won between the colts and the ****les in 1984.

They need to bring it back on national TV ----- NBC or ABC sports on Saturday afternoons. Have some kind of series like a show box and once in a while a house hold name on there. I think Zab Judah is fighting on some NBC network in March. Put money in a pot like MMA does and make good fight cards. do it on live Tv with commercials and have the sponsers pay the purse and let the consumer (US) view a quality program.

Two comments to you Ntas ----------

                  1) As for watching boxing in between big fights for fans like us (HARDCORE) it is easy to watch and appreciate the sweet science. for fans like (MY KIDS) they want too see some action see a fight poster on the train or a commercial to get them excited. Also the quality of fights at that level arent well what you would see from Mayweather Cotto.

                  2) Watching old football or baseball games even though you know the result is as much the same as what you stated about boxing. lets say you idolized Joe Montana and your son has Peyton Manning as his idol. You watch a game like the 84 playoff game where Dwight Clark caught the game winning touch down against the Giants and show your son how Joe Montana was the MAN in his time.....
