Why is there such a pessimistic view of Dirrell's career moves?
He has several things going for him: 1) his boxing ability is at the level where he can be a mainstay in the top 10 rankings at 168 and 175; 2) he's ranked high in different sanctioning organizations; 3) he seems to have Showtime's backing.
Lamont Peterson went from being released by Top Rank to IBF eliminator on ESPN2 to being the IBF mandatory challenger to getting a career high payday and winning the title in his hometown to being in position for another career high payday and big fight. The Dirrell's could do the similar without having to go to fNF...
Team Dirrell (Leon Lawson especially) is somewhat delusional if they believe they can dictate location terms to Bute. Khan-Peterson was fought in D.C. Because Khan, his team, and GBP wanted it there, not because Peterson commanded it. At 168, Dirrell is going to have to hope one of the titlists want to fight in the US (unlikely unless it's Ward) or he'll have to get his suitcases ready.Comment

Dirrell does have leverage. He has Showtime.
Bute needs either Ward or Dirrell to fight on Showtime, cause they want him against an American. Ward wants Bute to fight Dirrell or Froch before getting hi.. Froch is not American. Who's left? The Matrix.
So yeah, he does have some leverage.
Unless a follically challenged drunkie we know, comes in the picture out of nowhere. He's an American, he can save the day for Bute. And that's a much easier fight too. And Pavlik doesn't have much leverage with all the **** he's pulled lately, so he'll have to fight in Canada.Comment

In terms of talent Dirrell is right there at the top of the 168-pound division. In my eyes he beat Froch and he was also the first one to expose Arthur Abraham.
Realistically he can't dictate terms to Bute but it just might be a negotiating ploy.Comment

It remains to be seen what leverage he has without Haymon. He's not even rated by the IBF right now. If he wants to press for a Ward mando, he's positioned to do it after his brother. Froch-Bute is guaranteed action and Froch. Dirrell ain't. Hopefully, he just cleared the way for the better fight to get made.Dirrell does have leverage. He has Showtime.

Exactly, this is a good opportunity for him since Showtime wants to make it - thats a good thing.... he can win the fight and that's also a good thing. but he can't dictate terms on the location if really wants to make it the best thing ever and get in on the money Bute brings in Canada. hoping its just posturing about location to get them to pay a lil extraWhy is there such a pessimistic view of Dirrell's career moves?

Peterson might have not demanded the fight to be at DC, but if I'm not mistaken he rejected fighting in England or whatever, for the same reason Dirrell doesn't want to fight Bute in Canada. And, as we know, Peterson then had the fight offered in DC by GBP/Khan. So Peterson's patience and unwillingness to put himself in a position to get robbed, got the fight in his hometown eventually. Whether or not he had the power to do it, he got it cause of his own actions, his patience paid off.Why is there such a pessimistic view of Dirrell's career moves?

Peterson was a mando. Dirrell is unrated by the IBF. If that's the path he wants, he may have to win an eliminator or two. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not immediate leverage.Peterson might have not demanded the fight to be at DC, but if I'm not mistaken he rejected fighting in England or whatever, for the same reason Dirrell doesn't want to fight Bute in Canada.
