I don't believe it, cuz the match-up makes very little sense. Mike Alvarado might be one of the best LWW, but his name value isn't high enough. He's also not an established draw yet. Let's look at the LWW division shall we? Khan and Peterson are entangled in some ****** ****, so throw them out. Morales and Garcia are gonna fight, so they're out. Maidana and Alexander are gonna fight, they're out. Zab Judah has a fight, he's out. Matthysse has a bum fight, so he's out lol. All that's left are Mike Alvarado, Jessie Vargas, and Humberto Soto. Vargas is undoubtedly the easier of the 3, but if the fight is happening in Mexico, then JMM should fight Soto, no questions asked.

why do people always make the Katsidis reference? Alvarado doesn't fight like Katsidis and other than 1 shot he did nothing.

Fine, no need to Reference. Alvarado would be the strongest young fighter he's ever fought and JMM aint getting any younger.

Alvarado was working off the rust vs Prescott and had to deal with a very tall fighter(5'11) with one shot power.

He won't have that issue vs smaller Marquez.

Wanted to see Rios-Alvarado at 140, they have such similar styles. Maybe Bob didn't want to risk a future money maker, Rios, against someone who could possibly KO him.

Here's what I think happened. I bet Arum and Top Rank had Alvarado sign his end of the contract, getting the hopes of Alvarado and his camp up. TR getting their ducks in a row to perhaps offer Marquez a "fight one of our guys and then get a 4th Pacquiao fight". Just my guess...

While I do agree with your theory, why not have JMM fight Timothy Bradley instead, who is relatively the same size as JMM and would probably be a much more entertaining/competitive fight? Alvarado is a big 140, dude could easily make 147. Maybe Arum just wants JMM to get beat the **** up so in the 4th fight with Pac, he might be easy pickings.
