    how useful are trainers?

personally i think conditioning coaches are more useful, although coaches can shed some light on openings in an opponents style

majority of fighters seem to keep the same bad habits and style through-out their careers and that's how we can make educated guesses as to who is likely to win

Juan Manuel Marquez can answer you that question ... Without Nacho he wouldn't be the boxer he's right now...

If Pacquiao didn't have Roach's selective matchmaking and name brand we wouldn't even know who he was. He would just be another gatekeeper floating around the lower divisions for future welterweights to beat. Politics play a HUGE role in boxing...who is your trainer is one of the most important aspects of playing politics. Internationally, trainer probably holds the most thunder regarding politics, but nationality and even what city you are fighting in also hold quite a bit of influence.

lol, sometimes can just tell who have and who haven't had real life experiences with the sport. Never thought I would see such a thread.

Can you even imagine Tyson without D'amato, Jones Jr without Merk, Pac without Freddie etc...

It depends. Some fighters can think for themselves while others need another brain for them.

THere are also different type of trainers. For example Teddy Atlas is mostly a motivator while Steward is mostly a technical guy

Feel free to correct me here, but if my memory serves me correct Roy switched from senior to Merk to be his own man. He did, he shined, he became an entertainer. Had his best years with Coach Merk even went all the way to HW.

Lately he've had his ups and downs (mostly downs) and he've been working with his father again.

Here's an interesting article too, I believe it's from around Hopkins Jones II

im not following, this proves roy without merk wouldn't get as far?
and are you implying roy became an entertainer only when he teamed up with merk? im pretty sure he was clowning and throwing showboating flurries when merk wasn't in his corner earlier in his career(albiet he clowned in the amatuers where merk was in his corner, basically just proving roy was being roy, not changed due to merkerson)

and chad dawson has changed trainers how many times?

and NOTE that these trainers train ALOT of fighters

Your arguments are all over the place. If you think Merk had nothing to do in Roy's succes then you're contradicting Merk and Roy themselves. You can't possibly have your head THAT far up your ass, now can you? Watch beyond the glory and every other RJ doc - Roy always credits Coach Merk.

If you want to make the argument that Roy would've been great regardless, then I agree. But if you ask if having Merk at his corner, for him, made a diffrence, then the answer is clearly that they made a great team, and that it made a difference. Roy - Merk is a very poor example to bring up (for you) and I can understand why you switched it to talking about Dawson instead.
