    Is Jose Luis Castillo underrated???

Now I know Castillo has stayed far past his welcome in boxing (4-5 years too long), but people tend to forget about mentioning him as one of the top fighters in the early and mid 2000's, especially one of the top Lightweights of his era. In his prime and past prime-still good years, he was a top fighter and a big tiem contender, beat plenty of good fighters, and went life and death with Floyd Mayweather in their first fight, and even in their 2nd fight, he gave Floyd trouble.

    Jose Luis Castillo's notable resume:
    2000: Stevie Johnston- W MD 12
    2000: Stevie Johnston- DRAW 12
    2001: Cesar Bazan- W TKO 6
2002: Floyd Mayweather Jr.- L UD 12 (many ringsize observers felt he won the fight)
    2002: Floyd Mayweather Jr.- L UD 12
    2004: Juan Lazcano- W UD 12
    2004: Joel Casamayor- W SD 12
    2005: Julio Diaz- W TKO 10
    2005: Diego Corrales- L TKO 10
    2005: Diego Corrales- W KO 4
    2007: Ricky Hatton- L KO 4

The guy always fought the best available for big fights, always looked for the best, and did well. He had wins over Johnston, Bazan, Lazcano, Casamayor, Diaz, and Corrales. He had a very controversial fight with Mayweather, where if he'd been delcared the winner, he may be considered an ATG. He was one fot he top fighters in his era, and one of the best LW in the 2000's, and yet NO ONE ever mentions him as one of the best fighters of the 2000's, hardly ever.

yes he was one of the best. he fought the top 4 fighters in the division back to back to back to back at one point. he should have beat mayweather in the first fight but he should have lost to casamayor and also the johnston fights could have gone either way.

He's not underrated; he gets plenty of respect. Hard worker, knew how to cut the damn ring off like no one else these days. No disrespect to Chico, but he seriously got a raw deal in their first fight.

Corrales-Castillo and Mayweather-Castillo will always be boxing classics

Agreed, i think that he was just in a time where Oscar, Roy Jones, and Tito were starting to taking the boxing world by storm by the general and casual audiance, and took away from other great fighters such as Chico and Castillo. Dont get me wrong, WE knew who they were, but the masses did not. In a wierd sort of way.....kind of like a victim of circumstance.

Always liked Castillo, could cut the ring off very well, great pressure fighter, great inside fighter, in his prime would be a tough fight for anyone...

I think the boxing world will forever remember him for that classic with Chico and obviously getting robbed by mayweather. Maybe from a resume point of view underrated but him and Chico will always be loved and remember for that legendary war. And every boxing fan knows hes owns mayweathers first loss without a doubt Floyd can talk all the crap he wants about his record but we all know!

Castillo gets much respect on this forum and from boxing fans in general.
Most the casual fans don't know who he is unless you mention Castillo vs. Corrales however.

He was pracically unknown before he fought Mayweather, and it was THAT fight, which I and many others think he won, which brought him to public notice.A thing that everybody (even me sometimes) forgets is that when he fought Mayweather he was already a bit past his best. He was really only known as having been Julio Caesar Chavez' sparring partner for many years already, and I'm sure he'd left his best in all the thousands of rounds he'd had with Chavez.

Mayweather, as was usual with him, figured he had an advantage with all the wear and tear that Castillo already had. That was his second mistake. The first was made when he fought Emmanuel Augustus who had a record of about 20-17 or something like that. THAT was the best fight I've seen Mayweather in. He was MADE fight.

Although Castillo was Champ when he fought Mayweather, he'd got a gift in his return with Stevie Johnson which was altered from a loss to a draw. He only knew when Stevie came to is dresssing room and handed him over the belt.

Between fighting Johnson and Mayweather he had a few fights but none of any imortance, and I think that the fight before Mayweather was against a 30-15 guy (a bit of a guess) or something very ordinary like that.

I remember scoring the Johnson fight 8=4 for Johnson.
