Comments Thread For: 'Fighting Words' – Khan Loss Could Be Better in Long Run

by David P. Greisman - It should be verboten to suggest that a boxer is better off with a loss.

No fighter wants defeat, not in a sport based on both prize and pride. A loss signifies that the other man was better, or that you were not good enough, or that you got screwed. A loss can cost you momentum and support, and can lessen paydays or take away the possibility of big fights in the future.

Amir Khan should not be happy that he lost a close and controversial split decision to Lamont Peterson this past Saturday in Washington, D.C. But while his earliest discontent has focused on the controversy — on the two points taken away from him for pushing, two points that allowed Peterson to edge out the victory — his passion should eventually proceed to the source of the fight’s closeness.

It was the referee’s deductions that gave Khan the victory. But it was Peterson’s actions that made it possible.

And the fight was as much about what Peterson did as what Khan didn’t do.

These are the lessons that are taken out of losses, when excuses are discarded and explanations are discussed.

It all depends on him, is he willing to look in the mirror and do something about his obvious flaws or not.

To me he does not seem the sort to really have what it takes to improve in that way but who knows it is possible if he is willing. Especially with the built in excuse the fight gave him, he can't make excuses and really fix the problem~

Khan needs to adjust and change his style a bit by learning to in-fight and deal with pressure better. If he can beat Peterson convincingly in their rematch (Khan officially confirmed it on his Twitter for 31st March) then this loss has definitely benefited him and has made him a better more complete fighter. It's all part of his evolution as a boxer.

The pushing he did against Peterson seems to be a habit he built (read Malignaggi's reasoning). Just like Timmy's headbutting. Oh man, imagine all the point deductions there'd be in that fight since the refs will probably be told of their fouling ways.

I watched the tape and tried to make an accurate assessment without bias, hahaha

Hats off to both fighters. Peterson won my heart with his relentless energy coming forward on top of Khan.

I agree with the writer, Khan is not in his prime yet !!

          1. He tried in my opinion to emulate Pac. Pac will stand and let a fighter hit him to test his power and strength.

It was foolish for Khan to stop raise his hands and take punches and Peterson laid them in there ,,,wow those right hands on the chin. Breddis Prescott has nothing to say now. Khan proved he has a chin,,,,BUT ,,, Khan need NOT proved that. It was like he was trying to prove his Manhood thru the fight, and that to me proved a great difference.

          2. He needs to settle down with the speed and power and make it more deliberate, with accuracy, he will be a killer !! Thomas Hearns had the speed and accuracy and he was the KILLA !!!!!!!!! Khan needs to stop the floundering around

Good for Peterson !!!!!!!!!!! He has a good heart and humble, unafraid to mix it up and fighter people want to see fight. IF he throws that Jab like a machine and comes behind it with his power he will be a tough dude to beat.

          Just my two cents.

Khan is far from emulating or even trying to emulate Pacman .... Pac is a fighter, not a runner. Khan has a habit of pushing off and punching, then running. No one can claim that this is a winning style.

When you push-off you have the advantage to get shots in while the opponent is trying to gain his balance. That's why push-offs are ILLEGAL in boxing. Then Khan runs like the wind when ever he's challenged to fight.

Not my idea of a Champion or future great ...

Sure Khan has talent, but the skill of running around the ring at top speeds isn't boxing and NEVER was.

I think Margarito should try to fight Khan at 147. Khan might dominate with his speed but I think Margs can break him down by the 9th.
