Comments Thread For: Tom in Critical Condition After Brutal Beating By Jubatha

THIS writer warned against approving Simpiwe Tom to fight for the vacant South African featherweight title against Sabelo Jubatha while coming from a brutal knockout defeat by Matima Molefe in his last bout in May, but the warning fell on deaf ears.

it certainly doesn't sound like a sport anymore based on the writers description of went down. Terribly sad. I only hope Tom recovers

You know, I hate to see this kind of stuff. It's just awful. I hope Tom has a full recovery.

This comes right on the eve of another boxer having just died 2 days ago.

There were signs and then there was statistics. For more than twenty years Russian prizefighting has never experienced the ultimate tragedy, which can be imagined by all involved into the sport. No fighters have ever died inside the squared circle. Up until now. There were injuries and bad injuries. In 2009, Uzbek bantamweight Nosirjon Rozimatov fell into a coma after a severe beating he received from world-ranked opponent Alexander Bakhtin. He had emergency trepanation and he was lucky enough to survive. Once (in 1994) an aging referee passed away right inside the ring due to natural causes. There were chilling knockouts and one-sided beatings but luckily no one has succumbed to the brutality of boxing.

this sport needs a revamp in terms of rules to ensure the well being of its participants. Boxers are getting bigger and stronger every generation with no end in sight.

in theory one could almost argue that the stronger that fighters get, the LESS risky it becomes due to the fact that fighters die from sustained damage, and sustained damage can only occur when you don't have the power to put someone's lights out and keep delivering blows over and over. this is why MMA is relatively safe compared to boxing because of the small gloves and fighters' lack of chins they are always knocked out with the first jab that lands and therefore their brains are never susceptible to a lot of slow punishment.
So I would think stronger fighters would result in more knockouts which would result in less death but that's just a wild theory.
