Honestly I've been in a lot of forum and right now im quite confused myself some person say Floyd use the philly shell but in my gym we all think its more of a cross arm with his right hand keeped high.

Look at Toney, you will see that BOTH his arms are held really low, his defense consist basically in blocking the punches by rolling with them so they miss him or hit his shoulders. It leaves both his hands ready for a counter attack.

Floyd usually has his left down but he tends to keep his right hand pretty high, near the chin, and the way he dodges punches is a lot like Toney.

The difference with keeping your right hand low or high is the type of punches you will use to counterattack, Toney's right hand beeing low, he often use a right uppercut to counter his opponent.

Floyd's right hand being high, I won't really counter with an uppercut but will tend to use the straight right a lot of times, something he has became a master over the years in my opinion.

So their defense are similar but not exactly the same. The hand position beeing differents, the punches they like to use is therefore a little bit different.

And honestly I sometimes teach to young children how to box and I would NEVER begin to show things like that to a beginner fighter, these types of defense are really good but you need a lot of skills to use them. So I wont recommend these types of defense if you're new to boxing, learn how to jab, move in the ring and have a good footwork, good BALANCE, good head movement and after yes you can try these types of defense.

Also with these fighting styles, you permanently need to think, think and think again. You have to think about what your opponent will try to land on you, and know exactly how to counter it, so it needs a really high ring iq.

If somebody doesn't know what punch use to counter in different situation, he'll take a bad decision and will probably get caught hard and end on the floor.

Yeah you're right in a certain way, thats why I say im myself confused when i go on internet forums. People tend to say that their defense are the same and they use the shoulder roll, but I think its unfair to say that they fight exactly the same, cause I dont think its true.

Its not because to guys like to block punches with their shoulder that their defenses are EXACTLY the same.

Dont really know if you get my point...

floyd is too flat footed at this stage of his career , and as marquez showed you have to be moving at all time just to have a chance against manny !!!!! mayweather was able to get away with being flat footed aginst old ass mosley , and that bum ortiz , but once he faces a fighter with the foot work and speed of manny he will be in a world of trouble !!!!!!!!!!1

I think you're trying to say that Toney uses a philly shell because his right hand is lower. Toney prefers to fight at closer ranges, so his lowered right allows him to sneak in uppercuts.

Floyd uses the cross armed because his right hand is held high. Floyd likes to fight from a distance, so his higher right puts it in position to throw his str8 rights or overhands.

beatnuts, I disagree. You act like Floyd is mad active and fighting bums. Wow, he got caught by a punch against a legend like Mosley. He landed like 1 or 2 meaningful punches the whole fight.

Most of all though, I think the #1 thing you are leaving out is Southpaw & inactivity. The Mosley punches had much less to do with his new style and much more to do with him being inactive. If he fights and doesnt take vacations then Mosley doesnt land those shots. Floyd is always just working off a bit of rust when he's in the ring.

Then against Zab, you have a mad super quick guy who picks his shots. Floyd is walking him down and most of all Zab is a Southpaw. Thats going to take anyone a few rounds to adjust. After those 4 rounds then Zab basically landed nothing the rest of the fight. If Zab was a righty then he wouldnt have landed hardly any of that early.

I think if Floyd fights Pac in May then he may get caught some but if he fights someone else in May and then Pac in September, he will get caught alot less because he will be alot less rusty. He needs more rounds. Same thing with the JMM fight. He landed a couple of shots early but thats just due to Floyd not fighting in nearly 2 years. Youre not going to keep missing that amount of time and not get hit. Its remarkable that he doesnt get hit way more against these top guys with that amount of time off.

If it was any other fighter taking all those long breaks, there is no way they would be heavy favorites in fights. No one would pick Pac to even come close to Floyd if he took 16months to 2 years off and then tried to fight Floyd instantly or after 1 fight but if its the other way around then alot of people will act like Floyd has no excuses and should be the same ole Floyd

                  EXACTLY !!!

Thats pretty much what I tried to say in the other post ( my english is bad sorry ).

Floyd has like a cross-arm defense with his right hand pretty high, Toney more of a philly shell with both hands low.

So yes they both counter attack, but they don't use the same counter attack, Toney's right hand low is good for uppercut, but to have and effective uppercut any fighter knows that you have to be near your opponent.

Floyd's high right hand doesn't really permit him to throw uppercut but it doesn't matters cause he's a master with his straight right, so he can fight more at distance.
