By beating Margarito Cotto did something Tito never did: avenge a defeat. Tito never even tried to avenge his defeats. Neither did Benítez nor Gómez. Carlos Ortiz did.

Also, Cotto successfully changed his style enough to beat Margarito. Pedro told the press that Cotto did not knew how to clinch. I think he did a pretty good job with Margo (could still get better). Tito, on the contrary, was one-dimensional and couldn't adjust (see the Winky fight).

Cotto avenged his loss to a Mexican. Tito never even lost to a Mexican. Gómez couldn't avenge his loss since Sánchez died.

Cotto is closing in on the Rican greats.

Historically, Cotto will never be in the same breath as Trinidad, Gomez and Carlos Ortiz. He's a good PR champ tho....he could make it to the HOF.

I said something like that a few days ago. Cotto will probably never have a win like Tito's over ODLH.

But Cotto is putting some serious work. And, honestly, Cotto's rivalry with Margarito was better than any rivalry Tito had.

Carlos Ortiz was the only man to ko a mature Flash Elorde, twice.

Cotto keeps winning, there will be serious talk about his rank around Rican greats. He also has a chance to win a title @ 160.

That's true. However, it has been documented that Gómez was aching for a rematch against Salvador. He even went as far as going to his funeral because he could not believe Salvador was gone, meaning that his shot at redemption would never come to fruition.

I don't know if you saw his documentary, Bazooka: Las Batallas de Wilfredo Gómez, but reporter Rafael Bracero mentions that Gómez cried when he heard the news of Salvador's death because he would never get the chance to avenge his loss.

The rematch against Nelson, from what I know, was not planned. About Alfredo Layne, well, Gómez was way part his best and should have been retired. The win over Rocky Lockridge, albeit controversial and questionable, was the last golden moment in a truly stellar career.

No. But Cotto closed a chapter in boxing history. Had Margo won, his best victories before the Mosley debacle would have had some credibility. Today there would have been endless (serious) threads about how Margo proved he didn't knew/used plaster before. Cotto HAD to win, and he won.

Let's not forget also the historical relevance around this fight for Rican fighting. It had been a GOD AWFUL year for Boricuas in boxing. He closed the year with a win for us, and protected our record against Mexicans in championship fights.

agreed but I can see him consistently doing between 650-850k, which is pretty damn good.
