    povetkin vs marco huck next?

By James Slater: Unbeaten Russian star Alexander Povetkin made a successful first defence of his World Boxing Association (WBA) “regular” heavyweight strap last night in Finland, as the 32-year-old stopped tough and durable veteran Cedric Boswell in the 8th-round.

Now 23-0(16), Povetkin put on an impressive display against a fighter who may be old in years at age 42, but is fresh and was very hungry. Boswell, in being stopped for the second time in his long career, is now 35-2(26).

But what next for Povetkin? Seen by many fans as the best challenger for the mighty Wladimir Kitsch (or Vitali), Povetkin has said himself that he would like to take the fight at some stage in his career. However, fans hoping this may be the next fight for Povetkin are likely to be disappointed. At yesterday’s post-fight press conference in Finland, WBO cruiserweight king Marco Huck approached the podium and called Povetkin out.

Wanting to try his hand up at heavyweight, Huck, who has defended his WBO 200-pound belt eight times, said he needs “a new challenge,” and he wants Povetkin next. Povetkin seems interested in the fight, and he replied “let’s get it on.”

The match-up would prove a big hit in Europe, where both Huck and Povetkin are big names. At just over 6’1” to Povetkin’s 6’2,” Huck wouldn’t be giving too much away in height. Not an especially big heavyweight, Povetkin would not be expected to easily out-strength Huck or blast him out. Some fans may feel annoyed if Povetkin chooses to get it on with a cruiserweight when there are bigger, more legit fights out there for him against heavyweights, but I’m sure Povetkin-Huck would prove intriguing enough to attract a significant audience.

Huck can be an exciting warrior type, although he has been concentrating on his boxing skills in recent fights. A dominant cruiserweight, Huck would have to be given a good chance against Povetkin. The former Olympian did look good last night, though, appearing fast and sharp and accurate against Boswell - a fighter some good judges expected to cause the upset in Finland.

Povetkin gave credit to trainer Teddy Atlas, who, as fans know, made the decision not to let his fighter in with Wladimir Klitschko a while back. Povetkin will have to face “Dr. Steel Hammer” one day if he is ever going to be looked at as a real world champion, but it doesn’t look like being his next fight.

Helenius is WBO #1, but not Wlad's mandatory yet.
Arreola is WBC #1, but not Vitali's mandatory at the present time.

Thompson however is Wlad's IBF mandatory.

By James Slater: 39-year-old Hasim Rahman, already a two-time heavyweight ruler, will get a chance to become a three-time champ next year. “The Rock,” 50-7-2(41) has been named as the mandatory challenger for Alexander Povetkin, and the unbeaten Russian’s manager, Vladimir Khryunov, told Sportbox.ru how negotiations for the fight will have to be commenced before December 27th of this year.

As fans know, 32-year-old Povetkin faces U.S veteran contender Cedric Boswell in his first defence on Dec. 3rd in Finland. Assuming “Sasha” comes through that fight okay (and he is favourite to win), it will be Rahman next.

“Hasim Rahman of the U.S is Sasha’s official contender,” Khryunov said. “ We have to start negotiations with him before December 27th.”

Rahman recently told ******.com that he is training hard, awaiting his shot at Povetkin. Last seen tipping-in at a career-heavy 284-pounds, when he TKO’d fellow hefty-weight Galen Brown in the 6th-round back in June, Rahman had better be working hard if he’s to have a real chance against Povetkin. Rahman - who rose to global fame by shocking Lennox Lewis via 5th-round KO ten years ago, and also won the interim WBC strap with a points win over Monte Barrett for his second tenure as champ in 2005 - will always have a puncher’s chance.

Winner of five in a row against modest opposition since being stopped in the 7th-round by Wladimir Klitschko, the Baltimore fighter sees himself walking away from boxing as a champion. And against Povetkin, a far from invincible-looking fighter, maybe “Rock” will be able to make his dream a reality.

There are a number of fighters currently craving a shot at the Teddy Atlas-trained titlist, but after Boswell has had his chance, it will be Rahman next. The fans, of course, would prefer to see Povetkin in there with a Klitschko, but the former Olympian will instead face two “old” guys in a row.

Povetkin will, in my opinion, out-point “The Boz” and retain his belt next month. That fight doesn’t exactly promise to be a thriller, and neither does a Povetkin-Rahman showdown to be fair. Still, the latter could at least end via a highlight reel KO.

Rahman might, he just might, become the third oldest heavyweight champ in history next year. On paper at least!

Huck/Povetkin is a very intriguing fight because Huck is a good sized CW with power and Sasha isn't that big and well in my opinion not very good either.
