Mike Jones vs Sebastian Lujan
i didnt really get to catch the entire fight, i kinda lagged after playing ball and didn't get to the fight party til about the 8th round...but from what i saw;
*yawn*
Sebastian Lujan with his arm punches...Mike Jones fighting to the level of his competition...got a quick glimpse of the Lederman card in between rounds and can pretty much get an idea of how the fight went
is Mike Jones destined for these types of fights? the way his career is going, his management is molding him into a B-level fighter...time to step up and see if he has any potential at being a major player at 147
Delvin Rodriguez vs Pawel Wolak
i was really lookin forward to this fight based on their first bout...but right before the opening bell, one of my buds said what i was tryin to ignore in the back of my mind
'sometimes the encore is never as good as the first, sometimes it fails'
Gatti-Ward 2 wasn't as good as the first one but it was still one helluva scrap...that's what i was hoping for
what i saw instead, was Delvin Rodriguez putting on a masterful display of combination punching, a lot of determination and a true sense that he was tryin to put on an entertaining fight for the fans...he gets props
had he worked off the jab even more and didnt negate is physical advantages, it might have been an easier night for him
i also have to give Wolak props for his determination...although he looked completely different from the first fight, he hung in there and took a nasty beating
but arm punches from a volume puncher who no longer had the volume vs bigger, crisp combo puncher is never a good formula for success
but i was entertained...fun scrap
Brandon Rios vs John Murray
first off, i liked that Murray kid...it was the first time i've seen him fight and it was a very gutty performance from the Brit
he simply got out worked and worn down by a Rios who showed great resolve for a guy that literally tried to kill himself to maker weight
the 'thudding' punches weren't as present as previous Bam Bam fights and that's just due to what he went thru to get down in weight...
what i really liked from Rios was the relentless display of devastating uppercuts...Murray never made adjustments (close the gap between you gloves maybe?) and those uppercuts just ripped him apart...he was systematically broken down by the uppercuts and Brandon used a good array of hooks to mix up his attack
i got giddy when i heard HBO mention a Maidana showdown...i'd pay $60 for that one
before i move onto the main event, i gotta mention something about Emmanuel Steward's commentating during this fight
that was some of the most disrespectful **** i've heard to come out of that ****er's mouth
the line about 'murray showing heart that most brits dont have' or something really irritated me...IMO, Steward is useless
he's either insulting fighters, stating the obvious or flip flopping...**** him and his forever flattop...
Antonio Margarito vs Miguel Cotto
i made bets for a Tony win but by the time the main event came on, i wanted Cotto to win this fight and get some kind of vindication from what happened in 08
Miguel boxed very very well...similar to what he did in the first fight...i actually saw a few clinches and he walked Margarito down a couple of times...
he moved well, seemed to still be fresh going into the later rounds
we all knew that Tony's eye was gonna be an issue going into the fight...we all knew Miguel was gonna target that ****...it was common sense...Tony's corner knew this as well but there was no technical gameplan drafted against it
perhaps holding the glove a lil higher and protecting the eye? perhaps better equipment in the corner to help with the swelling? who knows, but those were all measures that i thought would be employed by Garcia and his staff
did i want the fight to continue? absolutely...i've seen worse...Tony wanted to go, im sure Cotto wanted it to go as well as the fans...am i surprised they stopped it? no, not really...the NYSAC is gonna cover their asses in a situation like this
i used to be a Tony fan...but the d1ckhead role has really sunk in with this fight fan and im no longer a supporter
however, i do have an issue with HBO's extremely biased commentating during and after the fight...we get it, you guys dont like Margarito...but even this fan who ended up rooting for Cotto got sick of it...keep your personal opinions for your closing segment...stop tryin to shove it down viewers' throats who are tryin to enjoy a fight
i'm not interested in a rubbermatch...hopefully that's the last time we see Margarito in that type of stage...back to ESPN FNF against c-level opposition that wont further cripple his eye
lastly, that was pretty bad ass how Cotto stared at him at the end
