Roger Mayweather Says Maidana is Possibility for Mayweather Next

    By William Mackay:
Instead of Manny Pacquiao or Amir Khan getting the next fight against World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr, it could end up being WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (31-2, 28 KO’s), says Mayweather’s trainer Roger Mayweather.

This would be interesting fight if it gets made, because Maidana has been known for being involved in nothing but exciting fights on HBO. It doesn’t matter who he fights, Maidana always brings out the best game in his opponent.
Roger told examiner.com “I think he [Mayweather Jr.] could probably fight, I think , would be a Maidana. The one who beat [Victor] Ortiz. I think that would be a better match than fighting a [Erik] Morales. He’s an aggressive type of fighter and he has a win over a major fighter.”

Not only is Maidana an aggressive fighter, but many boxing fans think Maidana would have beaten Amir Khan if it hadn’t been for referee Joe Cortez, who stepped in and kept getting in the way of Maidana after he had badly hurt Khan in the 10th round.

Cortez wasn’t much of a fixture earlier in the fight, but after Khan was hurt and Maidana was trying to finish him off, Cortez was in the way often and did a lot of separating of the two when Maidana was trying to work in close. There’s no telling what would have happened had Maidana been able to work without the constant breaks in the action or having to try and get around Cortez to land punches against Khan.

Maidana would be the perfect opponent for Mayweather to fight. Maidana has power similar to Manny Pacquiao, and the same kind of pressure style of fighting. He would make for an exciting fight he’d test Mayweather’s chin in this fight. He wouldn’t resort to headbutting like Victor Ortiz did, because he’s someone that usually stays composed while attacking. If Mayweather’s blocks his shots, Maidana will keep throwing until one of his punches get through. He’s not going to get frustrated and start fouling.

Ain't happening. I know they say it's a possibility, but I can't imagine that Golden Boy had Maidana in mind for the "Biggest fight out there". And it's all moot, considering the fact that Floyd is letting everyone know he wants Pacquiao May 5, 2012.

Maidana hasn't done anything at 147, and hasn't done much as of late at 140 either. He lost to Khan, althought it was a fairly close fight, struggled to beat a way past his prime Morales, and than beat a no name. Maidana-Guerrero at 140 is what I want to see for Marcos.

When Mayweather fought Hatton, he was unbeaten, top 10 P4P, and had been at 147 before for a fight. When Floyd fought Ortiz, Victor was coming off the biggest win of his career over previously unbeaten Berto. Maybe if Maidana beat Guerrero and than Bradley or Rios, or something like that, than Floyd would fight him.

Mayweather-Maidana would probably struggle to make 1 million PPV's as well. Ortiz wasn't a huge name and they did 1.25 million, but Ortiz could be promoted well to the US public, simply because he's American and was coming off a huge win. Maidana...not so much.

That's not what Roger said. The author, who also moonlights as Chris Williams and Scott Gilfoid among other aliases, snatched Roger's comments and switched them around to change whats he said. Roger only said Maidana would be an acceptable opponent, not that Floyd was fighting him next. The full, original article appeared on this website last night.

no it wouldn't. Maidana is a tough guy and all but he pretty much sucks. His fundamentals are whack and floyd would pick him apart so, so easily. Plus he's never fought above 140.

Roger just talking crazy, no way this fight would ever happen.

Good looking out... Never amazes me how these websites just hack off other people's work, mine included, without any real credit...

Maidana was life and death to beat Erik Morales at 140. Fighting Mayweather at 147 would be a total joke.
