Saw Cotto in Orlando

You would be surprised as to how many people don't know anything about boxing. I just think if you are going to wear a shirt with your name across the front and your kids are wearing a shirt with it as well, don't be upset when people approach you.

I will say this, when I yelled out to my sister and niece who were on the other side of the street in spanish he looked up. Now people were yelling in spanish all over the place but mine was the only Mexican accent in the whole place, I wonder if that's why he looked up?

Well yea that's what I'm saying. I feel like him wearing his own merch is irrelevant since the only people that would be interested in approaching him probably wouldn't need the merch to recognize him.

People who don't know **** about boxing aren't going "oh wow that must be miguel cotto let me run up to him".

Nice.... yeah he seems very indifferent when it came to fans and in general that's why he will never be like Tito when it came to fan bases. Both great fighters in their own right though.

Could you imagine if he was an A list celebrity lol, don't think he'd deal nicely with the paparazzi.

LOL No. He's not like Tito at all outside the ring.

Tito was beloved because he was very boastful about his Puerto Rican pride and was known as very approachable.

I always use this as an example to show people how much Tito would go out of his way to please fans:

I was there live for the first Calderón-Segura fight. There were a lot of PR fighters in attendance: Carlos Ortiz, Wilfredo Gómez, Juanma López, and of course, Tito Trinidad. I don't remember when exactly it was, but at some point before the main event, Tito was walking around the ringside floor taking pictures with fans and he also walked outside the ringside area to please those that were in the stands (but still at floor level). Here's where it gets crazy. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY UP in the nosebleed section, there was a group of about 15-20 people with banners, flags, and Jibaro hats chanting, "¡Sube, Tito, sube! ¡Sube, Tito, sube!" and they went on for like maybe 10 minutes or so. Tito would just look up and smile as he continued taking pictures with fans. Eventually, he WENT UP TO THAT AREA WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY ABOVE ringside where the cheap seats are and he took pictures with those fans. He was mobbed up there but when I saw that I understood why Tito was so beloved in Puerto Rico. The guy is generous as hell.

I agree Tinta, personality has a lot to do with it. I don't fault cotto because that's who he is.

At the same time though, I think if you are advertising yourself then you shouldn't act like your being bothered.

Like I said, i like Cotto, respect him as a fighter I just think the style match up is a bad one for him vs Marg. Unless Marg is somehow not the same fighter as he once was or that eye is seriously worse than people think, I see him beating Cotto.

I don't think either one of them are the same fighters to be honest. Marg has taken a lot of punishment, his eye is in question and Cotto just doesn't move or throw punches like he once did.

Plus the weight will be a bigger issue IMO. 154 lbs is going to benefit Marg much more this time around.

I wouldn't be mad if Cotto won though, like I said, I'm one of the few Mexican posters who respects and likes Cotto. His personality is a lot like mine.

That's a very cool anecdote. I can't believe that around 1997-98 I used to think that Trinidad was conceited. I was just a kid back then but I could not understand why he kept saying he was the best, that DLH was afraid, etc.

The fact is he was just proud and confident of his abilities. Trinidad was so accepted and admired that even when he had the scandal with the model and the kid out of wedlock, his image did not suffer much if anything at all. It was almost like giving him a free pass because of his excellent "social" record.

If Cotto was half as approachable as Trinidad I could imagine the parades here and the car horns honking as soon as his victories were set in stone. Do you remember the one when the Trinidad-DLH decision was read? That was incredible and it has not happened with any other boxer since.
