Jeff Lacy is a monster.
Hard to find his mean streak because it's buried under such a
pleasant facade, but it's there. It's there underneath 168 pounds of pure power, a compact force he unleashed Saturday night on the helpless Scott Pemberton, knocking out the veteran fighter at 2:59 of the second round.
This was Lacy's fourth title defense in the last 13 months and
arguably his best showing. Lacy plowed through Pemberton's array of jabs and soft right hands, taking the blows in order to expedite a series of left hooks and two potent rights, the second of which sent Pemberton sprawling to the canvas like Glass Joe from Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! Seriously, it's nice to give a worthy veteran a shot, but Pemberton was way out of his league.
What's next for Lacy? Super middleweight fans probably want to see Lacy take on Joe Calzaghe, whom Lacy was scheduled to fight Saturday before he begged off after suffering a mysterious hand injury two months ago (after the fight, Lacy didn't sound like a man who bought the injury excuse).
What Lacy should do is chide, goad and insult light heavyweight
champion Antonio Tarver until he agrees to a fight. I know it's not in his nature, but hammering Tarver's ego might be the only way to get him in the ring. Tarver, the Ring Magazine champion, spent years bemoaning the fact that he has spent his entire career living in Roy Jones' shadow. He finally beats the Artist Formerly Known as Roy Jones (come on, the Jones who fought Tarver was not the Jones of five years ago) and now he's hesitant to fight Lacy because of what, his lack of national appeal? What happened to fighting the best
fighters? What is this, Rocky III?
Lacy-Tarver would be the best fight the light heavyweight division (Lacy would have to move up) has seen in years. Tarver can't match Lacy's power but his height (6-2) and reach (75 inches) would enable him to keep away from Lacy.
This fight should happen. It has to happen. Forget Bernard Hopkins. Forget Calzaghe, who lost his seat at the table by not fighting Lacy. If Tarver wants to be in movies -- he was reportedly offered a role in Rocky VI -- he should join the Screen Actors Guild. If he wants to be a boxer, he should fight Lacy.
