Boxing isn't mainstream here at all, and the small population tends towards the more mainstream sports. For instance, I've been involved in sport all my life, and barely know anyone invovled in boxing.Originally posted by BeowulfAustralia is still a fairly well populated and sports friendly country though, it just surprises me that the Aussie competitiveness hasn't translated itself to Boxing.
But I agree with Moochie - it's more that there aren't many internationals to fight. In Europe, you can draw from many countries. In the US, there are plenty of boxers to draw from. Here, we can get only get NZ'ers or Indonesians. I reckon I could box for 1 year, and get ranked top 5 in my state - it's that bad.Comment

it is hard to finance a tournament in perth and have amateurs in from brisbane........whereas you guys can bus it from southampton to glasgow in an early morning....
and as mentioned, we are just so far away from the rest of the world and competitive boxing nations...........
it won't be long though until we are beating england at football.......mark my words...
To be fair it is a good 11/12 hours travel from Southampton to Glasgow. Kudos to you for working my hometown into your post though.
You could always spar with some Sheep from Kiwiland i suppose. Bet the Cannibals in Papua New Guinea might be nifty fighters as well.
Last time our nations played each other in football it was fairly embarrasing (for us).
Still won't be long until we beat you in the cricket........What? We did already?!

and with it not being very mainstream, there is no big cash involved.............meaning that we can't even really adopt fighters like the germans do so well........Originally posted by NABBoxing isn't mainstream here at all, and the small population tends towards the more mainstream sports. if we are lucky we'll get an immigrant who boxes well and lives here.......more of a marriage of convenience like tszyu, darchinian.....but we can't just recruit top rank amateurs from around the world and breed them........not enough support here for that..........Comment

It will happen... just a matter of when. We beat an English team in the past couple of years if I remember, but I think they basically put a 2nd string team on after half time.Originally posted by sanjayintcough cough!!!! lol
It'll probably in a big tournament, when the stakes are high - don't the English team normally choke on the big stage?Comment

but you'll never see an aussie world champ fighting at home all protected and still get dodgy decisions............
do i need to remind you of harrison, calzaghe, nelson, etc who never leave and fight more bums than a rio beach has!
I'm not a big fan of Harrison and "The Entertainer". Calzaghe actually has the skills though.
Tszyu lost fair and square.Comment

well 11/12 hours if you are driving mate........i know people who do it in 8 hours....but nevertheless, 10 hours or so is an early morning trip....leave at 3am and you are there at lunch time.....Originally posted by BeowulfTo be fair it is a good 11/12 hours travel from Southampton to Glasgow. i like calzaghe heaps also............but he stays there and fights mainly bums.........thats what i meant and unfortunately it is true.......i just hope he fights lacy....Originally posted by BeowulfI'm not a big fan of Harrison and "The Entertainer". Calzaghe actually has the skills though.

in regards to tszyu............the ref wasn't fair, and nevertheless, there should always be a neutral ref mate....even in team sports.........let alone boxing, which basically isn't a sport anyway, just a corrupt game!!Comment

To be fair, if bloody Glenn McGrath didn't trip over a ball before the 2nd test, the rest of the series may have been different.Originally posted by BeowulfStill won't be long until we beat you in the cricket........What? We did already?!
But, well done. You beat an understrength Australian team for the first time in 18 years, on your home turf.
Good to throw crumbs to the peasants occasionally...

We lost fair and square ( you were winning 2-0 at half time against the first choice side) in a friendly, but we wouldn't choke against a team like Australia in a major finals, we'd more likely capitulate to a team like Brazil.Comment
