There have been bigger fights between better fighters. I don't think there has been a fight with this much back story or build up.

    I don't remember a big PR/Mexican fight having a rematch either.

You cant have it both ways. Either Oscar,Margarito,Vargas, are ALL Mexican or they are not and Cotto,John Ruiz and other fighters like them that werent born on the island are either still rican or they are not. At what point do you draw the line?

To me you are what you want to be and if you are proud of being a certain ethnic background even in another country then you are what you want to be.

To me Oscar is a mexican, Vargas is a mexican, Margarito is a mexican and Cotto is rican just like I consider anybody of rican descent whether they were born on the island or not a rican unless they distance themselves from their roots then thats when I consider them something else like an american.
I agree with your point....but did you have to throw in a John Ruiz to make your point? you couldnt use a Wilfredo Benitez who was born in NY at least that way we can keep it amongst great fighters. I was hoping to never hear the name J.Ruiz ever again! LOL.

-Just trying to point out as well that Puerto Ricans arent the ones denying here who is Puerto Rican and who is not, its certain posters not wanting to claim DLH nor Vargas or any other Mexican/American fighter as a true Mexican.

Sorry but I call BS on this right here. I lived in the west coast for years, and oscar was not liked that much by the mexicans especially after the Oscar chavez fight.

Well the biggest fight ever should be Tito-DeLaHoya since it was considered a 50-50 fight between 2 undefeateds with great resumes already. But DeLaHoya isnt full mexican, and any other day mexicans wouldnt have supported him so its difficult to call it the biggest fight from a mexican's perspective.

Gomez-Sanchez would be another, but my grandfather says that fight was just like the Juanma-Salido fight where ricans where already expecting Gomez to run over Sanchez(no pun intended) and where not into the fight. It was the mexicans first real win over a rican and the fight believed to start the rivalry so its only the biggest fight from a mexicans perspective.

From a rican's perspective it would probably be Tito-Vargas, as it was the most exciting fight of the islands favorite fighter in history, adding to the fact that he won the fight. Bufor mexicans he was just another chicano who was rooted for cause he was fighting a rican.

All in all, there never has been a fight between a rican and a mexican where the whole fanbase of both countries has been involved, and Cotto Margarito wont be the exception.

IMO if Canelo becomes the star the mexican media has tried making him to be, or if Chavez Jr. becomes the real deal and starts beating everybody, and if Thomas Dhulorme wins the heart of the island, or if Jonathan Gonzalez turns out to be the greatest power hitter since Trinidad, the rivalries first fully backed fan based fight could be made in the future somewhere between 154-166 pounds.

          Dhulorme-Alvarez
          Gonzalez-Chavez Jr.
          Gonzalez-Alvarez
          Dhulorme-Chavez Jr.

Those could be the fights. Cotto Margarito isnt great cause both got beat by Pacquiao(so they are not even the best in their weight) and both are washed up by some of the fan's perspective on both sides.

This is exactly why this thread is a mess.

People can't even decide who's a true Mexican or not and therein lies the problem. I mean, jeez, if it were up to me, I'd just group all Puerto Ricans for Puerto Rico and all Mexican-Americans with Mexicans. I'm almost positive that if Vargas would've beaten Tito, some people wouldn't be bringing up the Mexican/US citizen issue.

Mark my words...I'm going to be bumping a certain thread after December 3rd...and it's not this one, we'll see how it's spinned.

For the record, I reiterate, ODLH/Tito was the biggest fight in terms of popularity, in terms of downright significance between hardcore boxing fans, it's Sánchez/Gómez. I'd also put Gómez/Zarate and the first Cotto/Margarito up there.

Those four were either largely significant in the rankings or highly anticipated in some way.

Ding! Ding! Ding!! Like I've been saying, their losses to Pac and other things took a lot of the shine away from the rematch. Imagine if there was no controversy, no losses to Pac and they were both very dominating after their first fight.....THEN I would put it as something special but this doesn't have the shine as it did the first time they fought either.

Any objective poster has to admit that. This fight isn't as great as it could've been.

At the expense of Cotto's and Margarito's integrity, this is like Pacquiao's hoes fighting over who gets a bigger cut from their pimp.

They got beat by Manny Pacquiao, but so what? Dude is arguably one of the 10-20 best fighters of all time. There is no shame in losing to Pacquiao now if they got beat by a bum then I would agree 100% but we talking about Pacquiao beating them.

I do agree BTW that some shine has been taken away but not that much and the controversy and hate the fighters have makes up for it.

I know, I was just joking around with what I said. No shame in losing to Pacquiao, not at this stage. I give Margarito a pass as well for losing to Pacquiao. In fact, he won me over despite me saying over and over again that he didn't deserve his fight with Pacquiao based on his recent outings.

I don't care how you look at it, Margarito fought his heart out and proved that he was/is a tough SOB who can endure a ridiculous amount of punishment. I still can't wrap my head around how you can have your cheek broken in the fourth round and keep moving FORWARD for 12 rounds as you're taking punch after punch after punch after punch after punch from a quick combination puncher. That has to be a painful and frustrating experience and Margarito got through that. You have to give Margarito credit for being a guy that's willing to go to hell for the win, though I wouldn't have blamed him at all if he had decided to quit. That injury was naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasty.
