Am I the only one who has problem with Rios vs Gamboa?

Gamboa's outgrowing 126 and moving to 130, he's young and will end up at lightweight at some point anyway, and it's a great move because of the amount of people that would not hold a loss against him because of the weight jump. Not to mention Gamboa is maybe the most gifted fighter in the sport and his only concern against Rios would be size. He holds every other advantage.

It's a ballsy move if it happens, and one Gamboa should make. It's win-win.

He turns 31 next month... he's not THAT young.

Gamboa should have at least one fight at lightweight before taking on Rios IMO. If you remember Gamboa moved down to featherweight because he kept getting knocked down at super feather. If I were Gamboa, I'd wait for Donaire to move up, and try to get a fight with Juanma, Chris John or Elio Rojas in the meantime.

I have a problem with it too. Gamboa hasn't even made his Super Featherweight debut yet. Sure he's fought there before, but now he's starting to grow into it. He needs time. He struggled against Salido and couldn't hurt Ponce De Leon. There's a big chance he'll get walked down and bullied. Rios has a good chin. This would be a better fight in late 2012 if Rios hasn't moved up by then.

I said it in the first thread about it too but I really think Arum intends for Gamboa to lose this fight to make Rios a good looking opponent for some of the guys at 140 or maybe Pacquiao in future.

Arum is all about the business aspect, despite his awesome skills and style Gamboa is 31 already like has been said, with time against him considering how much he relies on speed it's unlikely he has the frame to end up a legit opponent for the bigger names in the sport who are mostly around that 140-147 area right now, and that weight isn't likely to help his speed either.

Hope I don't offend anyone here, but he also doesn't speak english so his crossover appeal is limited and doesn't have an automatic fanbase, with the exception of the Cuban fans in Miami and maybe a few other places, at least not the way some other fighters do... he probably doesn't have the time to be built into a star the way Arum likes to do it either.

Rios is young, a big 135 lber who can definitely go up and be an opponent for plenty of the big names at 140 etc, is almost guaranteed to become a big hit with the Mexican fight fans (if he isn't already) given his style and that he fits the Mexican tough pressure fighter archetype.. you can bet Arum looks at him as a kid he can make a lot of money from in future.

If you consider these factors and that Gamboa doesn't seem to be getting a preparatory fight at 135 it seems obvious to me at least that Arum is trying to throw him to the wolves to make the guy with more money making potential into a bigger name for the future. That being said though Gamboa is a great talent and if he paces himself against Rios and sticks to boxing and finishes strong like he did against Salido I think it's definitely a winnable fight for him, though I feel the odds are against him and that it might well look like the first Cotto vs Margarito fight.

Gamboa is a good fighter, i think Arum is just getting lazy by trying to get Gamboa to the spot light quicker. Instead of taking him step by step the way he did with Pac. Just like Rigoduex the guy was supposed to be the goods and he's a good fighter but needs to beat a quality named opponet so someone can care about the guy. Or he could just be guided to look like Tyson but more work is needed to produced him in that light.
